View Full Version : Cobra Exhaust Manifold

I was talking to an exhaust guy here in vegas the other day. I asked him about headers and he said that sometimes a cheaper alternative is putting on the manifold from the 4.6 cobra. You can find them all over for $50-$100. I realize that you aren't going to see the difference that you would with headers but you wont see the $1,000+ price tage either.
Has any one looked into this, done it, or heard about someone doing it?
Look Forward to hearing everyones thoughts.

I have ported Cobra exhaust headers just sitting because I got them with an entire Cobra exhaust. I got Cobra FRPP shorty headers and mounted the Cobra exhaust system to those. Works great! I have those ported logs cheap if anyone's interested...

I'd go with FRP shorties before I wasted my time with the cast iron Cobra manifolds.

Hey Brian! At this point, $20 plus whatever shipping is. I can take some pics if you would like. Porting cast iron is a beotch, but, I don't need them. They're the exact same ones DR had in his kit years ago that netted 2 to 3hp (if any). Sound is supposed to be a lot better and I believe Blackmobile had the DR setup.

I don't think the Cobra manifolds are different enough to make any useable power.

+1
IIRC, rayjay put 'em on his car and didn't get much, if any, performnce gains.
Better off looking for a set of FRPP shortys and install them along with a good X or H pipe and a set of high flow cats. I went with a Mac Pro-Chamber mid-pipe on my car and have been very pleased with it. The off road model works great, and a set of Magnaflow high flow cats plus a short section of 2 1/2 pipe extends the pipe enough to clear the frame member.

Hehe! I know you saw the 2 to 3hp difference I mentioned. I know it's kinda buried in the sentence, but, if someone wants the logs... and I will tell you that the port matching to the exhaust gasket opens them up quite a bit! No one here evr did that and dynoed. I think the real value is the way they are cast to give way easier access to the header bolts! :D But for 20 + shipping, can't really go wrong now can you?

I installed 03/04 Cobra manifold while doing the Eaton swap. Picked them up for $30 and bought a 03/04 off road X pipe.... X pipe took some cutting/adding/welding to get it to fit.

OK so I picked up a set of these manifolds from a member here last November, then I picked up one of the DR 2.5 mid pipes with the free flow cats and an X pipe.
After pulling the original logs off the car yesterday I can't see putting the Cobra logs on it. I did take the time to port match them but for the PITA it was to get them off I don't really want to do it again in a year when I am tired of the small gains.
So, what year FRPP shorties am I looking for?

Good Deal!
Make sure you tack weld those plugs on.
I found a set of used ones but need to find the plugs. Do anyone know what size or where to get the correct plug?

Port matching the exhaust manifolds to the gasket make the ports larger but will do nothing to increase power. Think about it, you want the exhaust ports to be as seamless as the intake ports, but enlarging the exh manifold ports makes them much larger than the head's exhaust ports and that creates turbulence.
So, unless the exh ports in the heads are also matched to the gasket, it's totally useless to match the manifolds.

Those are 96-98 shorties and had those on my Cobra for many years, never had to weld the SAI plugs.

Hey Todd! You're right! My heads are ported, intake, exhaust, bowl and chamber work, valve job... Thats why I ported them and then I found a really good deal on the shorties and full cobra exhaust. :)

For frpp shorties? The front ports? You could always have them welded up cheap enough.

I doubt your exhaust ports are opened up to the size of the gasket though.
