I saw these tires on the Tire Selection PDF and was wondering if anyone has used them before. They seem to be a Taiwanese make of tire, really good prices, and have good reviews on some various site forums.
Link: http://www.federaltire.com/en/html/pdetail.php?DB=motosports&pdline=1&ID=1
Wanted to see if anyone else may have used these and had some input on them. I really need to get some rears for my MM and the Falken S/T Z01s are no longer available. I want to find matching front and rears with having to drop $200-$250 plus per tire.
If the car saw less traffic duty and more fun duty I would be willing to spend more on tires that aren't going to just get worn out during the 9-5 commute but I can't justify it at some of teh price. Like I really like the Pirelli PZero's The rear are only $217 but the fronts @ $315 apiece is to rich for my blood.
Considering the Cooper RS3A or Continental Extreme Contact DWS (even though I'll never see snow in Tampa if these are not viable. Just at $117 ea for the rears and $101 each for the fronts I'm tempted to try these Federals out. At that price a 280 tread-wear rating doesn't bother me.

Both tires have a 560 treadwear rating and other good ratings. I know several people that have these tires and have nothing bad to say about them. Whenever I replace the tires on my Taurus, this brand and model of tire is what I'll be switching to. Would of got them for the MM but don't make the rear size I wanted. 255/45-18 (Front) Generals and 265/50-18 (rear) Nittos now.

Easy: Nitto 265-50-18 rears. $300 shipped for 2. (NOT A TRUCK TIRE!)
There is a set for the front - TC friendly - Mike has them.

255/55/18 rear (willing to go up or down but I have TC and don't want to mess it up.

I looked but these never came up together. I see they are the same model name but one is Ultra High Perf and the other is on High Performance. Will definitely be giving these a good look. Might have a winner here.

Where are they only $300 a pair? I can only find them for about $200 each listed on most site and it appears they are back ordered most places I look.
What size fronts is he running with these in the back? Got to stay in that 3% window to keep TC happy. I'm interested in upsizing the fronts to just get a little more grip in corners but when I look for the 245/45(or 50)-18's I can't ever find a matching rear for a decent price or vice versa when I find a rear fronts are ridiculous.
Again what happened to the Tire Matrix website? The link to Neuralimpulse had a ton of great info but no longer works. :(
Thanks for the info guys, keep it coming if you can. Having limited free time is cramping my hunt for these and any help will be great.
Going to keep digging. If I can find the Nitto's a little cheaper I'll take that route (staying budget is key at this point) but the Yokohama's look promising.
If all else fails I'll be the guinea pig and try the cheapo Federal Tires. Will be about $440 for all 4 shipped for free and you can't beat that with a stick if they are decent enough tires to get me by for the year.
Basically I want a good High Performance (Extreme or Ultra is okay too) All Season tire that won't break the bank, will provide good Dry and Wet performance, but will still be better then some Touring tires made for a luxury SUV.

You can do more than one size comparison to stock at a time and even gives you a little summary report.

The 255/55-18 is a nice upsize tire to go to, fills the rear wheel well nicely. As it is a larger tire than stock you will have to correct your speedo (if you really want to) as it might be off a few mphs in the wrong direction (reading slower than you are actually going).
I think he means Nitto 555 NT which is a max performance summer tire but has a tread rating of about 300-320. I use them myself only cause I got a good deal on them and don't drive the MM that much.

I know about the 255/55s as that what I currently have in the Falken S/TZ01s. Unfortunatly they no longer make it in the 255/55 size so I am trying to find something else, if I need to go bigger I will. I just don't want to go smaller than the stock 245/55 size as I think it makes the wheel wells look huge even on lowered cars.
I was kinda surprised about the 265/50-18s as I expected them to be just a tad bit wide for the stock rim. If I can find a better deal I'll be all over it but still a little bit out of my range.

I got my General 255/45-18 (front) tires for $140-160 each off Tirerack.com.
235/50-18 and 265/50-18 would work for the TC but the rack/stance isn't as noticeable.

Not as worried about the rake as I can tweak that with coilovers up front and the air ride in the back. I just don't want that big open wheel well to the front and rear of the tires once it's lowered some more.

I've got a pretty big open wheel well running the 255/45 up front but I still have stock suspension. When and if I lower it I think it would look nice.

Well if they offered something for the sizes I'm looking for it wouldn't be an issue but the only tires Michelin sells that will match 235/50-18 for the front and 255/55-18 for the rear are some Grand Touring Pilots that go for $300 each for the rears. For that price I can find a much better performing tire that's meant for more than the daily commute.
No thanks and good luck when you go to find tires for your MM if you will only buy Michelin.

Not really a PITA if you're willing to accept your options are somewhat limited for near stock size. That's why I upsized.

Granted our cars are not exotic sports cars, def don't need Pilot Sport Cup tires on this big beast.
Favorite tire of all time.... BFG KDW2 with the flame type pattern tread, it was a summer only tire. I was so mad when I found out they stopped making them in 255/55-18.

Ya I found your thread after I posted this. Is that price from a shop in J-Ville or is it an Internet price.
I have found them priced pretty good online but everyone wants to rape you on shipping. One store was going to charge me an additional $35 a tire for breaking up a 4 pack along w/$60 shipping for the pair. Figure if I have to pay that much shipping I'll but some Nitto's or Toyo ST II's locally.

That great come back when you have something to add to the conversation. Go back and look at the responses to your first post about only using Michelin.
If you had ever replaced the tires on your car trying to match the front and rears you would see why it is difficult to find matching sets. I'd buy an American brand if any of them offered decently priced performance tires. But when the almighty brand Michelin is asking $300 for some SUV Touring tires then I don't even want to look at their performance offerings. I won't touch BF Goodrich because they manufacture the stock tire and basically refuse to offer the support needed for the owners of this car.
I'm on budget looking to spend less than $200 a tire trying to match all 4 the same brand and model. I don't care if they are made in Kenya as long as they stick to the road, give me decent performance, and last a little bit.
If the Federals are available for about $100-115 each those are tires I could burn off in 6 months and not worry about the cost of replacing them.

Phil, I'm running Fedral motorsports tires on my truck. I've been happy with them. Good in the rain and they have plenty of grip with an aggresive tread pattern. Best part was their cheap price. I got the at AK tires&wheel on Ulmerton Rd. Right near the St.pete Clearwater airport. 727 214 2241 tire4wheel.com The place was pretty shady looking but i was only there for the tires.

I won't worry about shipping. If the price is right I'll drive to J-Ville and pick them up. Should only be about 3-4 hours drive from New Port Richey.
It will give me a reason to come up to hang out with Landy and the rest of you North Florida boys.
If you can get the Federals for around the $100-110 each I'll come pick them up early next month.
I found a local dealer but he said the 255/55-18 size was on backorder and wasn't sure when he could get more. Half thinking of just going w/the Toyo Proxes ST II's or the Cooper RS3 A's talked about in this thread: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=72543

On a E150 Conversion I replaced the OEM Michelin with Goodrich Commercial truck tires to save a few.
On the expressway the steering wheel never stopped moving. It was exhausting to drive. With the OEM Michelins she was on rails.
This taught me first hand there is a difference beween tires.
Michelin had a very large plant in the USA and lead the way for auto plants in that area. I don't know if it is still there.

I was an owner of a firm that worked on it from concept to operational. Every company car always had exclusively Michelin. When I was a runner I would drive the new car from the dealer to the tire place to have the Michelins put on.
The President did not want a Michelin rep to see one of our cars with a non Michelin tire.

Getting Toyo Proxes ST IIs installed today. I checked a couple local places that carried the Federal 595s and they are basically on back-order in the 255/55/18 size and they had no timetable for when they wouold be getting more in the US warehouses.
Got a decent enough deal on Proxes so I decdied to run them for now. Will be doing the rears today and the fronts in month or so.
Next round of Tires I need I am going to just bite the bullet and buy some 20" Bullit rims in anthracite. 20 x 9 up front and 20 x 10 in the rear should fit fine. This will provide me with way more options in tire brands over the stocks size rims while giving me a new look.
I'll get my stock rims reconditioned eventually, put some Goodyears on there then keep them for shows and the occasional cruise.
