View Full Version : Motor Mess

After having my new engine built by a recommended modular motor builder here in state using the best parts, after starting I realized it had terrible piston slap. Sounded like a diesel...a loud diesel!

I won't go into details but there were many mistakes made during the build.

I then had the pistons sent out and had them coated, after re-assembly the piston slap noise was reduced by about 70% and almost acceptable for a forged motor. I started making arrangements to have a dyno tune done (now a 5.0 and higher compression) and I knew not to drive it too much. Well within 1 mile of the rebuild engine now has a bad knock.

Motor is coming out and being shipped to MMR in California to see what else was done wrong.

This has been going on for almost a year now.

I am either an idiot or a very dedicated marauder owner...yeah that's it...I'm dedicated!

That sux! :( Are you willing to post the builder so others may be forewarned? Do you have a real oil pressure gauge btw?

Wow sorry about that. Who was the builder, you should share so we stay away...

Looks like another good reason to go with an Aluminator

Sorry to hear. Maybe cut your losses and get a Cobra Ford Reman. Many have gone that route and I have not heard of a bad report.
Good Luck.

I know this all too well I was down for a year dealing a shady shop. Have Mark build you up a big bore stroker;)

MMR is LEGIT! Lots of "shops" make their living off of faulty "internet claims". Ive known two shops go poof that dogged MMR motor huh...imagine that?

Mark and his team really came through with my setup even when they didn't have to. I had a shop that wanted to replace all my pistons because of faulty "MMR" machining causing the piston slap? Turns out the it was the hydraulic tensioner when the shop I had it at put the motor back in huh.

Mark took care of me as a courtesy and couldn't be happier. Paid for gaskets, oil and a tow to his shop from NorCal. Keep in mind my motor had 7K mile on the MMR motor (09) before another shop worked on it in 2010 down for 5 months ran for a 2 days then down for another 3 months at the same shop before shooting the whole car back down to SoCal. They even arranged for my trans to get built towing back and forth to the trans shop in SoCal etc...

Its going to get tuned this weekend will post up results.

Mark had her washed up lookin nice for my long ride back up to NorCal.

Lidio just did the equivalent motor for me. All seems good & runs good. Only difference is my 12# of boost is from ported Trilogy. Dynoed fine with no hours on the new engine. Haven't had it to the track yet.
Keep us posted on yours. You will love it after the details get worked out.

I hope this finds you and your family doing well.

I am sure you miss driving the merc, but you do have a couple of other cars that can "haul the mail". :D

This hobby requireS time, patients and money;) it's sort of like a real estate deal lots of things out of your control. My experience with MMR though positive can be frustrating at times. Mark took care of me in the end; if in doubt talk to him. Is it their motor or?

Yes there is...one that understands the addictions...or on second thought, "is there such thing as a 'happy wife?"
