Is it safe/ok to turn overdrive on and off while cruising?

All depends how fast you're going. I wouldn't suggest it at 110 mph... ;)

J/K. The answer is yes. Actually, that's preferable to a forced downshift if you go to WOT for passing; the OT band is a weak link in the trans.

You'll get better mpg with it on.... just remember to take it off before you nail it.

I always turn it off when I'm at the light next to people to pass them...But after I'm done and just cruising at about 45-50ish, I'll turn it back on and the RPM's go down about 400 (normal). Just wasn't sure if it's best to do that while moving or at a stop.

Yup, what you're doing is just fine.

You can do the inverse if you're on the highway and want to pass, just take it out of OD, the trans will drop down into third, accelerate, get around the other vehicle(s) and then you can put it back into OD.

SC Cheesehead,

Let me know if this is correct. What I do on the freeway sometimes is drop it out of OD, possibly forcing a 3-2 shift, at least I think thats what it is.

Once my speed drops down I kick the overdrive back in.

Is that the correct standard OP?

Yeah, I do the same thing. Forcing a OD to 2nd shift is not good, the OD band does not respond well to that...
