Never underestimate what you'll see on eBay Motors (http://www.ca.autoblog.com/tag/ebay+motors). Take this unique creation, for example. Near as we can tell, it's the same 2002 Mercury Marauder that was modified into a two-door convertible by Ford (http://www.ca.autoblog.com/make/ford) for the 2002 Chicago Auto Show (http://www.ca.autoblog.com/category/chicago-auto-show). The car still boasts its Eaton supercharger bolted to a 4.6-litre V8 engine, and at the time of debut, the car was rated at a lofty 335 horsepower. We have a hard time believing that the extra ponies would do much to offset the weight of the additional structure and top mechanism on the car, however.

The vehicle is currently offered for sale by a dealer in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, though the listing is mum on how the convertible managed to make its way from the Windy City and into the dealer's inventory. If you like what you see, the machine can be yours for the princely sum of $75,000 U.S. or best offer. Head over to eBay Motors (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-Mercury-Marauder-Concept-Convertible-Low-Miles-4-d-/170652481673?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item27bbae3889) to take a gander at the listing.

Has anyone ever seen a pic of this car with the top up?
I thought I had read years ago that it did not have a functioning top?

That's been my understanding that there is not a top.

I think someone hellaciously overpaid for it thinkin they would turn a gigantic profit. Welcome to the 1 of 1 proto-type world of how to not make any money unless you hold onto it for 50 years. Want to know how to make a ton of money on a car like this? Start out with 2 tons of money and wait.

The gauge pod looks like it has a Boost gauge in it. What's the story on this car as to what it has in it and why it wouldn't be street legal. Just curious.

No functioning top. No body reinforcements. Computer-speed-governed to 25MPH. Bends in the middle when you go over a speed bump.

It was the two door proto-type, no VIN.

Looks incredible but not 75k. This car is not road worthy because it most likely has a salvage title because of the severe body modifications, and no cars used in major auto shows can then be sold to the public and driven

It had an S/C'd 2V motor, IIRC.

The body was basically just a 'vert mock up with no reinforcement to the frame to accomodate the loss of structural integrity from removal of the top and side pillars.

It was the two door proto-type, no VIN.

It has a VIN for a '99 Crown Vic, which I assume was the basis for the build, also has(or at least had) a sticker on it saying it was not approved for highway usage...

Assuming it really is a '99 Vic, it likely has the earlier suspension...

Why not just take it to a tuner and get a new tune! Bingo 25mph limilt is gone. As far as streetable. Sht. Slap on my current license plate and GOOOOO! I'd try like heck though to get it registered as a kit car or something. I'd drive it around my area. Or to car show fo sho.

It was, is, and always will be a concept car. Don't try and turn it into something it isn't. It was one of Mercury's last concepts. It belongs in a museum, not on the road. There are collectors out there that specialize in concepts. Hagerty's latest magazine just had an article on a few of them. This Marauder could end up being as well known and remembered as the XM-800 or Barris Super Marauder. (For those who actually like and remember Mercury concepts) I'm sure it's already had too many alterations trying to make it road worthy. Take some random production Marauder and cut it up or alter it to make your own convertible, but don't butcher this one of a kind dream car just because you want to DRIVE a Marauder convertible. It is very rare that a concept isn't destroyed when the factory is done with it. Give this one the respect it deserves. If I had the money I'd buy it and put it on display. Too bad I don't.

I totally disagree. Cars are built to be driven. A car in existance for display purposes only is a waste.

Dom, he's talking about a concept car, here. This one was not built to be driven, it's sole purpose is to be looked at.

It's essentially a facade, it ain't roadworthy...;)

+1 on the comments, kirk. This one needs to go into a museum.

Agreed, it's defiantly a museum piece...

Problem is not many are interested in a 10 year old hot rod Grand Marquis even if it is a concept, it's likely going to be a hard sale... Remember the Marauder wasn't killed after a two year run because of overwhelming interest...

As said already, production cars are built to be driven. Concept cars are works of art meant to be destroyed after they've served their purpose. This car is a piece of history that was NEVER meant to be on the road.

Here is a copy and paste from when my son and I went to the Mecum event 1-2010
The Bid Goes On $50,000.00 High Bid
Alex and I went to the auction today here are some picks of the convertible
I spoke with the owner Peter and his wife very nice people. he admited he has visited the site years ago and found us talking about the car. I asked him all the questions and went thru the car, even sat in it. The owner said that he had the car gone over and spent alot of money and made the car driveable but it only has the bill of sale from ford he gave me a copy, the car is built on a 1999 CV, vin number should be in one of the pics and the seat belts are not functional the tops are just sewn in to the seat back, that is the reason the vehicle is not road worthy.
We left before the car went up on the block and I see it was not filmed on HDTV Mecum show those bastards.

Other than this prototype has anyone ever built an aftermarket marauder convertible? How did it work out? Something special about looking back 4 ft of seats at another 6ft of trunk and open air.

That is the most tempting thing about the modern mustangs.

I don't think you would need much frame reinforcement with our cars. The frame is already really stiff. It's not like cutting the top off a unit body.

How does it only have 335HP?

Like 5LBS of boost is probably more than enough to make that 32HP gain from stock...and it's like they are bragging about it, lol.

Our tunes create almost that much...

It is a stock 4.6 2V CV motor so the S/C HP gain is like 100 HP.

I really like that Superchargered Marauder 4.6L emblem on the enginge valve covers.

That was my idea! No, really.

I met with Steve Babcock at Ford's site in Birmingham during the Woodward Dream Cruise in 2001. They had a 2003 PP car (or something close) there. As Steve and I were talking he asked me what things I would like to see on the production car. One of the things I told him was that I'd like to see the same type engine stickers that they used on the old 427 cars that said "Marauder 4.6". While my request didn't make it into the production car, they did use it on the convertible.

When I saw the convert come out in 2002 and I saw the stickers I thought, wow, sometimes they do listen.
