I'm about 1/4-1/2" below the hash marks on the tranny dipstick, how would you determine how much fluid to add in that situation?

Just add alittle bit then check, repeat until it's at the full mark.

After you add a few ounces, run the shift selector through the gears. Let it sit for a second or two in each gear...then check level again. I've found that reading the opposite side of the dipstick is easier, then just roll it over to see if it's up into the hash marks.

From the ADD mark to the FULL mark is one pint.
As long as the fluid is anywhere in the cross-hatched area, the level is fine (at operating temp, not cold). Better to be slightly below the full mark than to be above it.
