View Full Version : Does the Trilogy kit keep the knock sensors?

I know that most people think they are not needed and you can turn them off in the tune. But after reading some of Jerry's threads in response to Zack IAT question I swear he made mention to the knock sensor in the Triolgy tune. If so how are they able to retain it? Different lower intake? I know this can be a touchy subject and it's not my intent stire up anything just a question. Thanks
The 03 engine has one knock sensor, 04's have two. In both model engines they are located on bosses in the valley between the cyclinder heads. The bosses are ground down to clear the lower intake and the sensors are relocated elsewhere on the heads. They are not as effective in the new location so the tune is changed to compensate for the new location or they can be turned off IIRC.

Yes, they are relocated. There are differing opinions on their effectiveness in the new locations, but it is very similar to what is done with the Kenne Bell kit for Mach1 and nobody seems to have complaints about the way KB does it. The sensor sensitivity can be adjusted in the tune, or they can be turned off in the tune.

There is threaded holes right behind the heads you can use, wires will reach just fine. You should learn to trust your ears with a S/C and rely on nothing. Also, an AFR gauge is your friend.

Lidio removes them on his builds....

Some tuners use them to setup the timing tables. Set the timing to where it's safe, add timing until the knock sensors start to pull timing, then back off a little bit.
Some tuners use their ears or watch for the color of the exhaust to determine timing. And lots of them just use timing tables that worked ok on other engines instead of customizing timing tables to each individual car.

That's what my tuner does, once everything is set up we just adjust the knock sensors ability to pull timing to a minimal amount. It's handy to know what the knock threshold actually is, a lot of times there's a point where you can still add several degrees of timing with no knock but with no discernable horsepower gain. That's as good a knock buffer as anything aside from a straight up bad tank of fuel.

I believe that they are removed from the Lidio tune. At least they are in my 04. I spoke with Lidio regarding this prior to the install of #214. They remain hooked up to keep the CEL from illuminating. My understanding is that the response time of these sensors are a little too slow for the forced induction application. Also the frequency they are looking for is a little different when they are located on the back of the cylinder head. I also understand that the newer Ford knock sensors / PCMs respond much faster and are actually left "in play" on newer applications.

Mine is still in use. It is mounted almost in the original location, in the valley, but it's in the center instead of off to one side. But my block is different from the stocker and has room for it under the manifold.

You wouldn't happen to have pics of this ^^^, would you?
I would be interested to see that.

The 03-04 steel cobra block and most likely other steel blocks have one threaded hole right in the center/bottom of the valley.
Here found a pic.

I love how these threads pop up right after another thread that highlights the Trilogy product.
Search around. In fact, in my sig is a link to the now closed Trilogy forum. Click and search.

1+ All depends on your tuners preference. My tuner wanted them because he gets pretty aggressive with the timing tables then backs it down from there. I left mine out but should have left them in because of my new tuner.

DEFYANT. Thanks for the tip I searched the link you suggested and came up blank just as I did before I posted my question. Although I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed I do try and search for answers to my questions before I post them. I hope I didn't offend you or anyone else with a trilogy installed. That was not my intent. I personally want to keep my knock sensor and was looking for a way to do it.

You're not offending me. Just, this horse has been ridden into the ground and shot dead.

A lot of good info is in this thread showing different options. Thank you for asking the question and to those who provided the info.
As knowledge increases and technology improves so do our cars and the mods we make.

Really? Trilogy retains them but Lidio eliminates them. Shot dead?

I hate to say this but the only thread visible from your link is the Trilogy numbering thread.
I was also able to get to the goodbye thread via the 'forums' view.
I'd love to read some of that older stuff, especially if it that thorough.

I agree, I was surprised when I picked my car up, they were in a box with the cams, egr tube, etc..... I asked, he told me he turns them off in the tune, and, doesn't need them. I left it at that.
