View Full Version : Torque converter lockup

I notice that my 04 MM torque converter locks up in 2nd on mild acceleration. I've never seen this in any other cars I've owned. 3rd and overdrive yes but never 2nd. It does not make for the smoothest shifts IMO. I'd prefer if the TC would stay unlocked and only activate in 3rd and higher.
Any opinions out there?

My Grand National used to do that too. I guess I never really worried about it cause I used to lock it manually when I was racing and got close to redline in 2nd?

Ford programed all the MMs this way. When I'm driving in traffic below 50-60mph I leave the overdrive off. No difference in mpg and it shifts very nicely!

My GTA does the same, BUT ironically the transmission upshifts to 3rd before the lockup point in 2nd. I only get the 2nd gear lockup if I manually hold it in 2nd long enough.

I used to do this before I used the SCMT and it worked well. I have not found the need to lock out OD after the reflash from the tuner however.
