went to work this morning...on the way, driving down the road, i started to hear and feel a slight / odd rumble. Felt a lil more abrupt than what the bumps in the road would have offered...anyway, it stopped, and continuing down the road another few miles the ABS light came on. A few seconds later, when I went to brake, the brake engaged, but it felt like there was air underneath the brake as it was pushing it down, felt crunchy almost....(hard to describe)
Now, ABS light is still on, I'm stuck at work 'cuz as I'm trying to drive, at least at slower speeds my car sounds like it's making a constant grounding noise, or a low grumble...definitely feel the subtle vibrations...my brother in law who's a car mechanic is just a few miles away, but I'm worried about driving the car in its current condition as i'm not sure what's going on, don't want to make it worst.
To make it even better. I work on an army installation, so if he can't easily come to me... Why today....
Any ideas on what's going on?
Also, just of note...in the past, I've noticed the ABS light come on once or twice, and I've mentioned it but it's never really came with any side effects...

When was the last time you serviced the brakes or even inspected them?
Sounds like major brake issues.

Shouldn't be an issue to drive just a few miles...just leave plenty of stopping room.
May be as simple as a bad ABS sensor or there may be a problem with the pump...and THAT will drain the wallet. Need to have someone knowledgeable to look at it...
*EDIT* You might have an issue with the parking brake...they commonly disintegrate on these cars and something may have come loose that could make odd rumbling sounds and vibrations and may have damaged the ABS sensor.

It hasn't been too long. Last oil change I got about 500 miles ago, an alignment was done as well as everything I was pretty much checked. How thoroughly, I don't know. But my brother-in-law is pretty thorough with everything he does

Yeah, I was reading the forums and found a few people saying they had problems similar to this which were because of the parking brake. I'm pretty sure it was mentioned when I got this car back in July 2010 that it had already happened to the car before. So far I haven't had any problems with braking, it's just the noises/rumbles that it's doing...just makes me feel the bottoms gonna drop out...

Bad wheel hub? Or, as others have said, the ABS pump, brakes etc., a thorough checkup is in order.

Please let us know when you do get it checked out though. Hope it's not too costly!!

So far I haven't had any problems with braking, it's just the noises/rumbles that it's doing...just makes me feel the bottoms gonna drop out...Due to the design of the the parking brake in the Panther, you most likely will NOT have any braking issues, even if the parking brake assembly totally self-destructs. It's a sort of mini drum-brake setup that is completely independent of the service brakes.
Having said that, I've not heard of the parking brake causing "rumbles" per se, but it has caused numerous clicking, tapping, and other noises for people, including me. To me, rumbling would be a much heavier, lower-pitched sound than the parking brake would cause, but it's still an easy thing to check. You can even remove the whole assembly and drive the car safely until a proper repair can be made.

Check front wheel bearings. Bearing going out can cause noise and corresponding rotor wobble will cause ABS light to come on and the "air under peddle" feeling. Don't wait, check it NOW and don't drive till you do! Other wise you might find yourself on the side of the road with a mangled MM!

Well, she's up and running again. Quite a few things went wrong,...the bearings in the rear were totally blown, which had broken the seal and was spewing brake fluid in the rear....and there major wear on one of my rear axle rods, it was just filing it down and down. The other did have some similar filing, but not as bad. Not replacing it yet. Unless it has further issues. Didn't 'need' to perse, but replaced the brake pads as well. $300 bucks later and she's back on the road. Thanks everyone for their suggestions/thoughts in regards to this.

There was a TSB on 2003's for soft axles that would lead to that kind of failure. My 03 had that issue but it happend luckily right in front of a Ford dealer!

Do you remember how many miles you had on it when this happened? I have an 03 with 75K on it, so just wondering if this is something I need to watch for...would hate for it to happen right before MV9--worse yet, on the way to MV9!
Any kind of 'preventative maintenance' I can do (well, have someone else do since I'm not even what you would consider a shade-tree mechanic)? Anyone have access to the TSBs out on the Marauder?
Thanks

My girl has 128k miles on her, so she's up there in her age...but she's still running great, with the exception of these few problems popping up here and there. As far as maintenance, alls I know is the basics. Luckily my brother in law is a mechanic and was a huge help with this project. I'm the computer tech in the family, I'll fix everyone's computers in the fam; he takes care of the cars...

That I did not know. Good timing on where it happened for you. Luckily it happened when it did. If it had waited, I would have been stranded on the side of a ride with my wife and her mother in the middle of a not so good part of Baltimore.

So you are that guy at work! Saw your car a couple of times...looks good. Never had time to stop and find you. My car is silver with 2011 19" mustang wheels. What bldg # are you in now?
A friend that owns his own shop had to replace the complete rear-end assembly in a Marauder because the owner ran it till the right axle busted... Worn axles aren't to be taken lightly...

Hah, yes I am that guy. I'm over in BLDG 3148 currently. I think I've seen you driving around. Small world.
