I have something leaking onto my diver's side tailpipe right at the rear axle...
it looks like dark oil...so I quess it's gasoline...? I seem to remember a post about this a long time ago...
Please let me know what it is?
Thanks, Architect

Anything around the inside of your rim(s)?

Gear oil can look almost black when dirty. Does it have a smell to it?

Sounds like it's either diff fluid from the breather hose on top of the driver side of the rear axle, or the axle seal itself is leaking (which is when you'll have a bunch of crud on the inside of your rim).

Mine had this happen when the dealer overfilled the rear axle, and it dripped out of the vent tube.

If it was petrol, it would evaporate very quickly on the tailpipe. If it's still wet, then it has to be gear oil.

I think you all hit it....
Sounds like gear oil from the vent...it's coming from above the tailpipe...
no leaks around diferential ...
Thanks for the leads...
I'll let my local Ford Dealer have a look...

Do it soon...if you are in fact blowing gear oil out the vent, then either it's way over-filled (did you recently have it changed?) or there's something causing internal pressure; you don't want it to blow out a wheel-bearing seal...and that could be a lot more expensive, especially if you have a dealer do it.

The ford dealer flushed and refilled the differential and showed me where the was a small amount of metal filings that were in the dif...
Isn't it normal for a small amount of metal filings to be present in a car with 75,000 miles:confused:
Yes, the oil was coming from the vent off the differential...
What kind of noises can I expect if the dif starts to go out...:(
Thanks, Architect

Any catastrophic failure of the differential will most likely be preceded by some kind of roaring, rumbling, clicking, tapping, or whining sounds for a while. There is a magnet on the filler plug that should catch any metal filings and yes, a small amount is normal at that mileage.

Did they remove the axles and check the bearing area?
