View Full Version : Coolant Resevoir Cleaning?

So while my engine is out, I've noticed that the inside of the coolant resevoir has scale deposits and is a bit discoloured overall.

Any ideas on how to clean it out? I was thinking CLR and hot water, but since it sees hot coolant temps, would this be of any good?

Ideas/tips are appreciated! Thanks.

^Nice...

If I recall correctly CLR isn't supposed to be used with plastic. In the past I've filled them with degreaser/water combo and shook the hell out of it, let it sit for awhile and then go nuts with the garden hose. Gets the big stuff but it won't look like new unless you can get something in there to scrub the film off...perhaps see above post.

I was thinking vinegar?
I have my system drained right now too and was pondering the same question.

I used play sand and tide in my washer resevoir and it worked better than most other things (bleach, vinegar, degreaser), but still didn't look new. (if you do the play sand you better wash it over and over and over again to make sure none is left.)

Have you priced a new one? Maybe they aren't to costly.

I used "Ajax" or "Comet" in mines with a brush & green pad to get out the stains/unwanted material inside.

But as with anything plastic when it gets old it'll start to turn yellow/brownish color.

Ding ding ding!!!

Mine was stained! So I just replaced it with a new one. If I remember right it was only like $30.00
