my car recently started making this same noise and this video matches it perfectly.... so its the starter?.. or some belt or timing chain?.....

i plan on putting it in the shop this week and showing them this video so they can grasp wth im talking about

Sounds like the starter isn't disengaging.

Weird just noticed mine doing the same thing TODAY! My remote starter grinds it for a second or two when I use it. Probably has something to do with it.

Is our starter the same as the CV and Town Car's?

Mine had been doing this on and off for a while now and I just noticed it getting way louder and longer lasting TODAY as well, how bizarre. All of our starters were probably manufactured at the same time and this is how long it takes them to begin failing....probably going to see a lot more of this.

Its a tiny piece of magnet roaming around inside. Stupid easy fix that will work for years to come for free. I did mine almost three years ago and never had a problem or noise again. Just open the starter up and remove it and grease everything up while your in there.

That first video sounds exactly like mine... Just bob do you know if there are any writeups on what you are talking about doing, or is it really obvious when you get in there? My 03 has been taking a really long time to start recently as well (as in 2-3 seconds of cranking and even then sometimes I have to stop cranking and try again). Battery voltage shows decent (though its the original battery).

I bet if you replace the battery you MM will start right up. It's just a matter of time until the original battery leaves you stranded somewhere far from home.

Just open the starter case and you'll see it immediately. I think I did a write on here a couple years back, try an advanced search. I'm on my phone right now, and that's kind of a pain to do. Litteraly a 10 minute job after the starters out.

My remote start wouldn't start the Marauder on the first try..... replaced the 4 or 5 year old Optima Red Top with a Die Hard Platinum. Remote start works great!

I just pulled the starter out of there and took it apart, I didn't really see a little piece of magnet floating around in there but maybe it was too small to see. Safe way to clean up the inside? What kind of grease?
