Hello folks! I have more interesting tales from dealing with dealerdom.
Took mine in today for routine oil change and realignment. Took a lot longer than expected...turns out that car was badly out of line, so bad it took the tech about an hour to get it all put right (Gee, what do all those red lights on the Hunter machine mean, anyway? A toe of -.93 is okay, right? I asked the tech. He just grunted and twisted something loose... ) Took the car in at 10:30; didn't get out of there until 3.
So I'm sitting around, bored outta my mind...finally got up and went back into the service bay to watch the fun. One of the salesmen approaches me...Mr. Quinby, I've got a guy coming in, he thinks he wants a Marauder, he thought about it last year but didn't jump on it then, now his car has broken down pretty bad, almost unrepairable, and he needs to do something pretty quick. We don't have any in stock. Would you be willing to take him for a ride in yours?
Decent guy that I am, I say Yeah, sure. The tech here (I pointed under my car) is still tryin' to get 'er back together, prolly be done in a little bit, when's your customer getting here?
Pretty soon. I really appreciate...One of the techs who was working the next bay over said the salesman should offer me part of the commission. I say (knowing what I do about commissions and how new-car sales aren't that great for 'em) just comp me a couple of oil changes and we'll call it even.
The customer shows up. Tall guy...definitely Marauder-sized. After introductions, I give him the lowdown: It really is a great car. 12,000+ miles on mine, nary a serious glitch (which is true, BTW), might wanna get the red or silver tho, because with the black, I'm in the wash rack at least once a week. He says he'd prefer the black. Tells me the decision is between the Maxima and the Marauder. Needs the headroom. Tech brings my car out, does a quick test drive to make sure the alignment's holding, brings it back about 15 minutes later. The customer and I head out; I show him slow. I show him fast. I show him 75 mph on I-55. I show him 80 on the return trip. The car is on her best behavior and tracks like a bullet in flight, even for the parasite drag of all the dirt built up over the last week. I offer to let him drive it; he says no, he's good with what he sees. We get back to the dealer; he goes to talk with the salesman, I go to close out my shop paperwork. After I'm done, the salesman finds me...and hands me two coupons for free oil changes. Oughta last me the next six months at least. I look over at the customer (wish I could remember his name...pretty decent guy). He's filling out paperwork; I turned out to be the clincher in the sale. Guess I shoulda held out for the commission...
Spread good will, folks. It pays.
BTW, I told the customer about this site, and gave him my handle. Hopefully we'll be hearing from him soon...
