Would this procedure be safe for us?
vs. getting new ones or having a shop do it.

Probably, if done carefully, but the bigger question is why? The poster said his injectors sat around for years and were gummed up. If you've been using any name-brand gas you shouldn't have any such issue. The most you should need is a bottle of Regane or Techron a couple of times a year to keep things spotless.

Do they really stay that clean after nearly 9 years? Those little minuscule filters/seals seem like they would start to lose a little efficiency after pumping 1000's of gallons of high pressure fuel through them over time.
Unless you are having a problem that can be traced to or is highly likely to be a bad injector leave them alone, if it was a GM that would be a different story.
I've cleaned 100's of injectors using a professional off the car machine and have not seen the filter screens with anything in them. The filter will trap smaller particles than the screens so if it made it through the filter it will make it through the filter screens.
I did them on one of my CVs that had 150-175K on them at the time, just because I was bored and could do it for free. It improved the flow of 1 injector about 1%, the other 7 showed no difference in flow rate after the cleaning. It did not provide any difference in driveablity or MPG.

I do it all the time on boats. But I don't remove the screen. I use my yamaha combustion chamber cleaner and let it sit in the injector where the screen is for about half an hour. Make sure it stays full as it seeps into the injector. Then blow it backwards with carb cleaner and triggering the injector.
The filters are an orange color and they start out dark and grey when dirty and come out nice and bright when clean.
Its hard to tell that it has actually done anything on a car. Because most of the time is very little throttle. Now a boat on the other hand. When they are dirty and you go WOT you loose about a 1000 rpm. While the boat idles fine, WOT performance suffers due to the fuel FLOW need.
