I finally decided to ditch the FM modulator for better MP3 sound with the PIE adaptor.
Question - is the supplied harness long enough to mount the adapter at the front of the console or does the adaptor have to be placed somewhere behind the HU because of harness constraints?
Thanks!

Which PIE adapter did you get?
Before I went with an aftermarket head unit, I mounted my PIE adapter (RCA inputs) behind the radio.

I got the FRD03-Aux/S.
Ok, I was just wondering if the "box" would actually fit behing the HU.

The box is about the size of a deck of cards or a cassette case. Not knowing what is behind the radio in an Escape, I'd assume it will fit behind it or the HVAC control unit.

If you mean you are installing the Escape Audiophile CD-6 unit into a Marauder replacing the factory radio, it is a very tight fit for the auxiliary connector. The PIE unit connects to the back of the radio, and then the factory wiring harness plugs into it. I could not get the new radio back into the slot with the auxiliary connector installed and had to cut out a portion of the back of the radio housing slot (in the dash) to make room for the extra equipment. There is quite a bit with the various wiring harnesses, connectors and the electronic units. With a hole cut, everything fit in fine. I fished the PIE connector down behind the center gauge console and then tucked the connector cord to my Zune (I had to be different) up under the center console. My unit has an Aux connector that plugs into the headphone jack rather than the more common RCA connectors, but it works fine. I just drop my Zune into a cup holder when using it. Vastly better than the FM modulator unit (which worked intermittently at best.)

DUH!! That's what he's trying to do......
There is room behind the EATC assembly.
I did cut out about 1/4 of the tray towards the front of the car.
I went with an aftermarket headunit and connected the AUX RCA inputs to a 3.5mm female jack that is mounted close to the lid on the center console. I use it with my Zune, tablet, DROID2 and other MP3 players.

Thanks guys. I'm ok with a little tray modification....much more than that and I'm in trouble.:(
BTW, I will be using a Zune HD as well.
