F250 Won't Start

I borrowed my friends 2003 Ford F250 this weekend. It has the 5.4 engine and 88k miles. I turned the key and it started just fine and then 2 seconds later it shut off and wouldn't restart. It turns over just fine, but will not fire. We checked for a burned out fuse for the fuel pump. Checked the fuel cutoff switch. Can't tell if the fuel pump is working or not. We pumped the gas pedal while trying to start it and we didn't smell any raw fuel. I'm thinking fuel pump or plugged fuel filter. Any ideas? Thanks, Curft

There should be a fuel pump relay and I don't know if the trucks have a FPDM like the MMs have. With it being a truck, it should be very easy to lay underneath and listen for the fuel pump coming on and to pound a little motivation into it ;)

03' should have a FPDM, I would verify voltage at the cut off first, if it's not there, check your relay and fuse for the relay, if it is there, check for voltage in/out of the driver module.

It is very possible that it is the pump, it's also possible it is a lot of things, a scan tool can help you navigate your way to the problem at hand.

My friend took it to the local Ford dealer and they determined it was the fuel pump. From what I've seen on the interweb, it looks like the fuel tank has to be removed. I'm trying to determine if this is something I can do. Anyone have a rough idea on what a new Ford fuel pump costs?

The fuel tank will need dropped, depending on how much fuel is in it, will determine how much you have to drain out of it, 8lbs a gallon, I would recommend draining the tank.

$472-496 is retail for the pump, the part is also dependent on the wheelbase.
