05 crown vic my winter beater, alternator is over charging my battry and i got acid all over the the battry, lose my dash lights and turn signals. the car is a former police car,
so i about 2 weeks ago i replaced it with a new atlternator, everything gose well, than i got the same problem today, so i replaced it again, and after 10 min of driving, its doing the same damn thing, my battry light is flashing again and losing my dash lights and turn signals. battry voltage show high over the limit =..

p.s
my car uses 200 amps can i buy a lower amp alternator? would the harm anything?

Please help
thanks
yours bazzel

How old is the battery? You could have a cell shorting.
I quit using anything but AGM batteries on my stuff. No water to boil

does it have a separate voltage regulator or is it incorporated in the alternator?

PCM controls the charging circuit on late 04 and up.

The regulator is intact with the alternator

Dose that mean i got to change the pcm?

It means that I would suggest that you look into your problem, the PCM controls the rate of charge, the idle speed when under heavy load etc.

I would not just start changing parts, I would verify the problem before changing anything else.

You say said you changed the alternator, was it a Ford piece, or was it an aftermarket unit? Sometimes that stuff is hit and miss.

What are the specifics of the overcharging, i.e. what's the voltage, the amperage, does it change when the car comes off idle, does it change under load. What is the difference in voltage between the positive post on the battery and the lug on the alternator? Need more info.....

voltage is supre high, always when i reve it i loose light power everything but the car runs

It may be super high on a gauge, but you need to measure it with a volt meter, need a specific # as opposed to "super high".

Battery light is on because there is an issue with your charging system? Can I ask a question? Why are you posting here? Didn't Spectragod say don't change anymore parts until you resolve the issue, did he not ask you for specific info? If you do not know how to let us know the specifics of your problem or you do not understand, then you go out and change more parts why bother? Take it to a shop and save yourself and us the time.

Dude, PUMP YOUR BRAKES (control your emotions)! Problem solving requires detail info, right now you are coming across upset and we understand. Take a step back and answer in a controlled fashion.

Putting in a "smaller" alternator will not fix the problem. The amp rating of an alternator is simply the maximum amount of current it will supply under worst-case conditions. In other words, it won't charge your battery LESS than a bigger alternator.

You need to put an accurate voltmeter on the battery and see what readings you get with the engine off, and with it running. You shouldn't read more than about 14.5 volts with the motor running, or you will be overcharging the battery. As somone also said, a defective battery can cause the same issue, so get it load-tested as well.

Doubtful, Dom has more respect for people. More like someone was bored, and posted an imaginary problem, asked questions that were impossible to answer without supporting information, then attacked those that tried to help him. Honestly, a perma ban would solve that bull$%it quickly.

Try pulling a fuse for the accesories like the windows, AC, lights, etc and see if the alternator holds constant volts. That will help you narrow down where the problem is. When the alternator is under a load, the regulator will increase the output. Something in your system is putting a servere load on the system and putting the alternator into full field.
