Hi guys...any ideas on why I can't move the shift cable freely into park....w/ linkage disconnected from trans. and shifter?
I know the Explorers are having problem w/ the shift interlock solenoid. But this is keeping people from shifting out of park. PLUS, it seems that the cable that runs thru it works...meaning, when i hit the button on the shifter..it will work as it's supposed to allowing shifter to travel freely into park...AS LONG AS THE SHIFT CABLE IS DISCONNECTED.
So: In a nut shell, the cable alone will not travel all the way to park...it goes from Rev. to 1
There seems to be a clicking sound coming from the area of the e brake, the cable goes thru something there...I also put my e brake to the floor WAY to easily making me wonder if it's something by the rear brakes.
Any ideas?
BTW, due to 160+K miles...and HARD NYC driving...I wore out the plastic bushing that connects the linkage to the transmission lever...just a little FYI there.

Update: I found a 25A fuse that was blown in the dash under the steering column. It was taped to another 25A fuse. I'm hoping this is the problem.
Sorry about the double post...but I don't understand something, over 40 people viewed this post...yet, nobody had a clue to what this problem is?
I"ll keep forum posted about this problem.

I've never heard of it happening before.

When you put the trans into drive, the parking brake will automatically release so thats probably what you are hearing by the pedal. There is a audible whoosh sound when it happens.
Check to make sure the linkage cable isn't melted against the exhaust or any hard bends.
I can relate to constant NYC driving, thats exactly why my car sits more then its driven. ;)

The only thing that comes to mind is...... with the miles, the cable is out of adjustment? Or, maybe there is an obstruction somewhere around the shift lever mechanism itself.
I would probably start by inspecting the shifter assembly mechanism, just to verify that there isn't a piece of change, loose nut or something that could obstruct it's travel. If that looks good, start working your way to the transmission. Real doubtful that it is electrical, especially if you can get the car out of park.

Every once and a blue moon this happens to me and its just the shifter housing getting pushed back just a smidgen which is somehow enough to not let it go into park. Push up on the plastic around the shifter then give the shifter a firm push forward to see if it will lock/click into park properly.

well here's the deal...
I"ve disconnected the shifter...( totally dismantled it...and it moves freely when cable is disconnected.
I disconnected the linkage and the cable moved freely....except where it needs to slip into park...( and that's w/ the shifter disconnected too ).
The cable is in good shape.....no meltings.
So with the dash apart, and the cup holder center console off..and shifter bolted back in...i brought it to my mechanic and told him about the power wire to the brake pedal...and the shift interlock solenoid....let him figure it out.
Haven't driven it in two weeks...sure was nice to get out and tear it up a little.
I'll let you guy's know...
Hey...how is the tire situation these day's? Will I be able to get my rear tires? I heard since Chevy came out w/ the Camero that we get our rear tires produced again...or more rapidly....is this true?
Oh...and never let your girlfriend drive the Marauder....

Your ignition cylinder and associated apparatus also plays a part in the shifting process. check around there as well.

So the shifter and cable are eliminated.. Can you take the connector on the trans and manually move the selector to make the car go into every gear and park? Sound like vaccum lock solenoid whereby your foot needs to be on the brake before the trans will go into or come out of park.

So thanks guys...guess what, it was the cable itself. I"m p;icking up car soon..but somewhere in the cable it was getting hung up...wierd
Yea babbage...i could move shifter manually under the car by the tranny...into park..and I also could do it w/ shifter hooked up...but it wouldn't go into park.
Thanks for the help guys...i'll post a pic of the broken cable...

Hey guys...so they had to cut the cable out...I got the car home...now there's no rear lights..and the engine cranks...but won't start...it's like the coil wire is off...but there's no coil...
All fuses are good...but i don't know anything about those relays...
any ideas? even the foot light by the e brake won't go on now...( could be blown..but doesnt' look it )

If you have no rear lights that's controlled by the brake switch @ the brake itself.

Ok....but would that stop; the car from getting spark?

No, but it would stop the car from going into gear.

well..she goes in...I just sprayed gas into carb and it didnt' fire. Anything electrical u can think of? all fuses are showing ok.
can't think of any relay's that would effect the spark..

I just replied fastblack...it went somewhere else so i'm replying here as well...
I shot some gas into the carb and she didn't ignite....this has to be some sort of fuse. or...w/out rear tail lights...the car won't start?
Leave it to me to get the weird stuff.
