If you only had 2 shocks to choose from, KYB or Monroe Severe Service, which would it be? Please no "neither, I'd use..." answers; I've narrowed it down to these 2. Thanks, all.

I've had the KYB's on for just over a year/15K miles and very happy.
I removed the QA1's for the KYB's - I'll NEVER get QA1's again!

I selected the KYB shocks based on KYB being a mnufacturer of OEM shocks and positive reviews here.

I'd pick the KYB's. Who's car are you lowering?

Oem ftw! Ha. But of those two I'd have to try KYB. I have Monroe and I don't like them.

I've got Monroe Severe Service on all four corners and really like them. Firm, but not harsh, at least in my opinion.
Excellent ride at highway speeds.

I'm having front KYBs installed in the morning -- can't wait. Have had a bad OEM shock for several weeks now.

I'd pick the KYB's. Who's car are you lowering?Neither...after talking to Russ at MV9, I want to replace the rear shocks in Phoebe. He told me that when the gas leaks out and leaves only the hydraulic fluid, the ride can become harsh and truck-like, but won't necessarily get bouncy. That's describes Phoebe exactly, so I wanted to get opinions on Monroe vs. KYB. I'm thinking Monroe Severe Service for the rears and either those or possibly the KYBs for the front if I decide those need doing.

I was thinking of going with the monroe severe service in the front. It is an HD fleet shock with a bit less compress weight than the sporty KYB's. Poor roads and potholes are taken a bit more easily with the Monroe I'd tend to think. More noticeable with factory tires up front (very stiff)
Whats the ruling on springs and wear? I have 80K on my MM now and need to do shocks, ball joints and perhaps the springs. Moog looks good says it's same as factory.
Police springs and KYB might work well too.

Monroe sever service on the rear, KYB, w/ a cut coil on the front, works great for me.

kyb but have not tried the monroe severe service (have tried the regular monroes are too mushy and bouncy). have them paired with eibach springs. rides nice. like the shocks but not sure I'm sold on the eibachs.

Driver front shock started leaking at 42k miles. Replaced both fronts with Monroe Severe Service. Good ride and just enough firmness.
Rear still has the stock shocks.

Thanks for that post; I had a truckie harsh feel going on so I replaced the rear with OEM @60K and it did not change the jounce but I forgot all about the harsness from before I replaced them. I thought I just wasted my money.

Sounds like you're getting more suggestions for the KYB, but I've got the Monroes and I'm very happy with them. I got the two fronts for about $110 at OReilly's for the pair.

Mary, was that price for each, just the rears or fronts? (In any event, that's a good deal).

FWIW, I strongly considered the KYBs as well, but after Russ and I talked it over and looked at pricing, warranty, etc, decided to go with the Monroes and have been very pleased with their performance.
Momma even likes the ride, so that oughta tell you something... ;) -----> :D

Does anyone have the motorcraft part number for the rear shocks, I've got a set from the dealer, and he said they are correct, but they don't look anything like the originals .

I have installed two set of the Monroe Severe Service and like the ride. The main reason Rex and I have the Monroe is due to if need to replace in a few years no question ask you just get a new set. The KYB are more of an OEM replacement unit but harder to warranty if it is needed. I have had three set of front struts on my car. The OEM set on my 03A marauder where replaced at 35k due to leaking. Replaced with Motorcraft units. The R/F started leaking in Feb this year with 60k. So now I have the Monroe with just over 14 k on them this year and ride and handling is great. Russ.

IMO, the Monroe Severe Service, but you can't go wrong with KYBs either.

KYB aftermarket monotubes up front with stock springs. KYB says they are 5-10% stiffer than the OEM front shocks. I had the Haake single and double adjustable fronts and rears with both 450 lb. and 525 lb. springs. Was not happy. Left the Haake double adjustables in the rear for towing. Very finicky to set up and temperature sensitive, plus seals leaked on three shocks. Good luck
