Hi

My black 03 MM is in pretty good shape but as predicted the bumpers are repairable (I think) but trashed. So I am going to get them redone and it occurs to me to also get my roof repainted. It has three spots where rust is building up under the paint, 2 of which have small metal exposure.

It's still in the early stages so no way it's structural yet, but I have seen some other folks with outdoor cars complain of blistering on the roof, trunk, and hood.

So I may have an opportunity here to get the whole car smoothed out where needed and resprayed. Is this a common roof problem, or it is car wide with other peoples car or even across the board with Ford? I would rather get ahead of it if the stock paint/primer/clearcoat is weak overall.

BTW from 2008 on the car has been washed regularly, but I'm the second owner so who knows. Vast majority of the paint it still mirror like. Just some clear coat scratches haven't gotten around to fixing.

I've heard of many other Marauder owners with the same issues and I'm also one of them...

Have heard about paint restoration...Might be cheaper then repaint?

This got me thinking:

I've been doing spot touch-up with POR15 until I can get around to a full repaint.

Odinson;

I too have that rust bubbling through on the roof above the D/S rear door. I had the roof sanded and repainted and within three weeks the infection was bleeding through and maybe even spreading.

However, I have a moon roof and water may be coursing down from there. My wife's GM does not have that problem.

Me thinks more than sanding will be needed.

Haven't consulted with an expert yet.

I have no moonroof and my car is blistering like there is no tomorrow.. there are over a dozen dime to quarter sized spots, looks horrible.

Starting to sound like I should do a full respray if the price is right. I'd like to keep this car forever.

Used to own classic cars and was always to late/to broke to do a preventative respray.

My avatar wasn't supposed to be prophetic. :p

BTW, no moonroof. Just random dots in the middle of the roof. Third spot is along back window molding, at least that makes a little more sense.

From all I've seen over the time I've been here and read about Marauder stuff, if you have that problem at all, you need a full repaint or you'll just be putting a band-aid on the cancer (no pun intended.)

common problem that I too just had fixed. My shop actuallt removed inside roof panel as I also had a decent roof dent. They did a great job on all three panels and the car looks better than day 1...had spoken to Ford a few years back and was told it was a production problem but as second owner I missed the boat on fix..

Did they say it was a production problem with the 3 top panels or the whole car?

Other paint is holding up fine. I have a small chip where the primer is showing on drivers side fender and no rust for 2 years. That's why I though it might be a problem with specific parts.

I have rust spots right underneath my drivers side rear door, on my roof and on the edge of my drivers side front door along the "a pillar" portion. The paint is absolute garbage on these cars.

Interesting video on the restoration of a near new BMW. Too bad George didn't share his secret of how he reaches the over 700 degrees required to get PTFE(Teflon)to bond to any thing.

For those of you having various degrees of paint problems and want to pursue a restoration of your paint I suggest that you get a reading of the thickness of the paint to determine just how much you have to work with before sanding or compounding. Unfortunately, you will most likely find that there isn't much to work with. Just try to preserve what you can with a decontamination and light to medium polishing and start saving for that repaint.

The best thing may be take it to a pro for an evaluation on what can and can't be done. Not really a job for a noob.

Where are you located in Michigan?

For those of you having paint problems how about posting up on what steps you do to maintain and preserve your paint? May be interesting.

I've got a similar spot on my car along the top of the windshield, DS A pillar area.

FWIW, a new paint line was planned for installation at the STAP in '05, so had MM production continued, problem would have been resolved...

If you can afford the repaint it could end up being a blessing to your particular car. Could be a Gran Torino situation where perfectly good cars are rotting away 20 years from now.

Is it the same paint as the other panthers or was there something special for MMs? Are they all doomed? (at least through 2004?)

Sorry to harp on this but I'm hearing numbers like 2k to 5k thrown around for a good job. Lots of money for unnecessary work.

Such a shame because the Factory paint looked so sharp.

I've got one spot about the size of a dime on the roof of my DBP, plus a couple other smaller spots on the hood, so far I've addressed via touch up paint, but down the road, a new paint job will be in order.

I've got the same "blemishes" on my Marauder, funny thing, when I took a tour of the plant with the cv.net gang, I noticed that some of the roof panels were less than perfect with noticeable "spots" on some of them , before paint. Probably defects or debris right in the metal. Shame

P.S. I had to have my black roof stripped down to the metal and repainted over the summer due to paint blistering.

Yup, changes made to the STAP paint line.

Not all '03s look bad, it was the early production that had the most problems.

Had the roof stripped down to metal. They sealed it with something to prevent any further rust. Then they primered it painted it then clear coated it. Had a freind do it who works in a body shop. They did use oven for the paint. So far it looks good.
