I need a new oil pressure sender for my "Real" oil pressure gauge. I can't remember where I ordered the unit originally, but it came as a kit with the gauge, pressure sender and instructions. Can I just order the pressure sender, or do I have to order the complete kit? And if so, where can I order this from? Thanks, Curt

Search eBay or google "Autometer 2242"

I just had the very same issue with my 'real' Auto Meter gauge. Assuming you have the 90 degree sweep, 0-100 psi gauge, then the sending unit is part number 2242. You can't get it direcly from Auto Meter so you'll have to buy it elsewhere (Amazon, eBay, Summit, Jegs, etc).
I got mine (new) off ebay. I found the best price there. New one works perfectly.

Wow! seems like these sending units fail often, may need to pick up a spare!

I took my bad one apart and posted photos here.....cannot find it now but it is fairly complex and has a sweeper on a wire wound resistor that wears out!!

My pressure fell off quite a bit over the 5 years and 150k miles I ran it so the new one with the proper reading was quite welcomed!!

Thanks for the help guys. I hope it's my sending unit. At idle I'm at 2 psi. My local O'Reilly Auto Parts store has one in stock. It's a little more than the ones on eBay, but no shipping charges to deal with.

Running 0w30 Mobile 1 my oil pressure is over 100 psi cold / idle. Hot idle its at 20 - 25 psi.

Don't tighten the nut on the stud too tight. Use a lock washer.

The factory switch sender sets the gauge at 75psi. I installed a new pressure sender unit a couple of years ago using the stock gauge and it reads 50 psi cold and somewhere around 25psi hot. Its not accurate but at least I know I have pressure.

Its not accurate but at least I know I have pressure. That's an understatement. Using the OEM gauge unit with an aftermarket sender has been determined to be very inaccurate. See fastblackmerc's reply # 10 above. You have no idea WHAT your actual pressure is, John. I would put the correct gauge unit in for real peace of mind.

If you just want to know if you have oil pressure keep all the stock hardware. It works just like an idiot light... either you have pressure or you don't.

When my sender failed (cracked housing--I was told--bad oil leak)--my dealer had one overnited from Memphis --when my local O'reileys had 2 in stock for about $45--cost me aver $100 --and the service manager only charged me for an oil change labor---good guy----stupid parts manager---stupid me---been perfect since--old age does have it's problems;)--Maury

Replaced the pressure sender last weekend. Back up to 100 psi at cold start up and about 25 psi at idle when warm.

I've been trying to replace the volt meter, oil pressure gauge and sender this weekend using the thread at http://www.mercurymarauder.net/reviews/showproduct.php/product/25/sort/2/cat/12/page/1. The new volt meter works fine, and both the volt meter and oil pressure gauge lights come on, but it's not registering any oil pressure. I've pulled the new sender out, re-teflon taped and reinstalled it. I've checked the wiring at both the gauge and the sender. So heck, did I pull the right thing out in the first place? Is this what the original sender and connector looks like? It was right under the oil filter.

If you installed the new sending unit with a new o connector terminal it should be working

It might be the teflon tape.

The sending unit needs to be grounded to work.

The sending units use a "pipe thread" so it shouldn't leak.

Check the connection from the sending unit to the factory wiring.

My original sending unit started to leak about the same time as everyone else that installed the real AutoMeter Oil pressure gauges.
AutoMeter replaced our senders under warranty.

Now it is a few years later and the pressure has dropped considerably.
I think it is time for another fresh sending unit.
Going to price AutoMeter and Ebay...

I learned this with my first electric gauge. Since then, I choose mechanical whenever the option is available.
Right now, I have a mechanical oil pressure gauge and electric oil temp. gauge, but only because there was no mechanical oil temp. gauge available. I bought a spare sensor at the same time I bought the gauge, for when the inevitable happens.

how often do mechanical gauges leak oil into the interior? Often, or virtually never?

The AutoMeter replacement sender they sell at O'Reilly's is the same as the ones from all the other suppliers. I have had to replace several of them. I think it is because of the wide pressure variations in the MM emgine and that is mounted on the engine it is subject to vibration. Either way, it will either drip oil from the wire end or the guage will flucuate and read low when it starts to go bad.

I finally got around to posting the pictures of how to use the factory connector on the Autometer sender. Takes a bit of work, but looks stock and in all the cars I have done so far, no failures. Look in the gallery under my name for the all the pics on the whole guage conversion. I had posted them years ago, but somewher along the way they disappeared. They seem to last a couple years or about 30K miles it seems (the senders, not the pictures).

I had the original Autometer sender fail at about 1,000 miles. No leaking or any other visible signs of why it failed.

Replaced it and has been working fine for over 60,000 miles so far.

I'd have to go with practically never. I've done this in 3 cars for a total of 15 years or so, and never saw a single drop in that time. I'm sure others have more experience than that.
I suppose there's some chance of a leak due to improper installation, but I can't see a failure happening.
