View Full Version : Why is my engine cranking, but no start?

It's like the coil wire is off...just won't catch. I recently had the dash apart because the CABLE connected to the shifter and the tranny was somehow broken.
Now that that is replaced...I bring it home from my mechanic...and the thing won't stop. I have NO TAIL LIGHTS...but flashers work...brake lights too. Front headlights work..high beams....
I know there is an elec. problem somewhere...and it has been suggested to me that the switch at the brake could be shot...would that stop the car from starting?
I also know that I have gas. ( both kinds ).

You say you know you have gas, does that just mean that there is gas in the tank or you can hear the pump do it's ~2 sec prime when you first turn the key on?

Sounds like there is a pinched or cut wire somewhere.

The brake light switch only affects getting the car into gear.

Check the owners manual for the relays for the fuel pump, etc. Check that they are OK.

Is there gas in the tank?

Can you hear the fuel pump?

On the fuel rail there is a schrader valve, looks like a tire valve, turn on the key and press the valve in, keep a towel around it as gas may shoot out.

Go back over everything you and the mechanic did.

How did you get the car home?

Let us know what you find.

Since he made it home ok, maybe after you got it home the fuel cutoff switch in the trunk was accidentally tripped???

nope. had no idea there was one..but the button was all the way down.
I had sprayed gas into the carb and it didn't catch...
No tail lights...no interior...went thru all the relay's and checked them w/ the horn relay...I bought one of those black relay's...and checked the blower..*( since my blower isn't working either..)..and the starter solenoid. didn't start..blower didn't blow..
U know what blows?

also take into consideration that i primed the carb w/ gas...didn't take....would that still be a fuel pump thing? This car doesn't have a carb. Yes, it could still be the fuel pump. Could also be the CKP...crank position sensor. If the PCM doesn't detect a signal, it disables the COPS from firing.

LOL..It's a '69 why? lol..i'm an ass..look..i pulled the air filter hose off...opened up the butterfly valve's and squirted gas in both ports....I guess i'm lucky I didn't blow up.
so, With all the electrical goin on...it's gotta be something like the CKP or PCM
Man i hope this fuel tank doesn't need to be taken off...been there before..
So I should be looking for an inline fuse to the CKP..or PCM then?

Because you can't pour gas in a 2003 or 2004 Marauders car-bo-rator. And you are not going to hear your fuel pump kick on on a 1960-anything.

CBT

Probably your battery. Not enough juice to kick it over. And you have no inline fuses.

There are fuses for the computer, and fuel pump.

The computer is what turns the fuel pump on. When it gets the key on power signal to "wake up" it provides a ground for the fuel pump relay for about 2sec to "prime" the system. The computer then shuts off the fuel pump until is sees a signal from the crank position sensor.

Since you are experiencing other electrical problems that is where you should start. Get a test light and start checking for power on both sides of all the fuses. Looking at the on-line diagram at Autozone.com I'm showing that the fuse for the brake lights is also one of the fuses that supplies the PCM. So I'd start by checking fuse #19 under the dash. If it is bad try starting it w/o touching the brake pedal after you replace the fuse.

oh boy..this is gonna hurt:
I swapped the 20 amp fuse from the fuel pump to check my moonroof since it is blinking..
Forgot to put it back...runs great!
Now the other elec. problems: No tail lights...and no interior lights..( the backseat overhead's work ). No fog lamps...( I actually only have 1 since I hit something in the road w/ the drivers side..so there's just the harness wire tucked in the bumper...it's been like that for years....no problem.
Do you guy's know of any inline fuses under the steering wheel dash for the climate control blower, and interior lights?
Sorry about the lunkheadedness...I should probably be demoted back to junior member. ( thanks by the way..i'm honored ).
So in a nutshell:
No blower
no tail lights
no interior except backseat
no little light by the e brake
no fog lights
all fuses 'look' ok..i'm going to test their poles now w/ tester.

No prob. w/ the pump....I forgot to put fuse back when I used it to check the MoonRoof
I opened up the dash under the steering wheel and fiddled w/ the wires...got my blower back.
AND...I DO have interior lights up top by the moonroof....but I have to hit the switches up there to get them on. The light switch on the dash (left),won't turn them on.

Well unless you are a certificated airplane mech you wouldn't be messing with it anyway. ;) Case and I have been looking for a boat to shoot our new music video on.

As far as the interior lights, I would try playing DJ with the rheostat knob. Just move it back and forth a bunch. Usually that doesn't get moved around a lot so it might need some buildup knocked off of it.

Hmmm.....in this day of modern technology, it might be best to get it checked. I'm going to state the obvious and say cars are not alive, but that light is the car trying to tell you something. So it will not start and run, period? All cranky, no starty?

The LCM won't prevent the car from starting.

If the foglight wiring shorted out it would blow the fuse. The foglight fuse doesn't have anything to do with the engine.

Where on LI are you? I have a scanner, a lift , and free time if you need a hand figuring this out. Its sounding like bad connections or a chaffed wire somewhere causing havoc. I just fixed a co-workers mini-van that would run rough, threw 7 codes and the transmission would kick out of gear every once and while. The problem was a separate ground wire that went from the relay module to the battery. I cleaned the contacts and it ran great.
Didn't Charlie (DEFYANT) have a issue like this and it was the harness that run along the drivers side sun visor?
