Where's the car from? What I see is nothing but surface rust and is the least important thing you should be looking at if you're considering buying that car.

Did you get an OASIS or CarFax report on it?

What should I be looking at ? Than

Does it make noises on start up?
How does it shift under load?
Does the steering feel tight, or is it "wobbly"?
Do all the electronics work properly?
Can you get maintenance records for the car?
Are there any signs of fluid leakage on the axles, differential, etc?
Do all the door panels fit straight and do they have uniform gaps between panels?
Does it have a salvage title?
And like Bunny said, can you get an OASIS or Carfax report for the car?

There's prolly a bunch more things, but those are a start.

If it sat outside in the weather, in Massachusetts for a bunch of years, I could see that happening. I would put it up on a lift and really get a good look at it.
Rust/rot never sleeps, and if the rest of the undercarriage is like that, I'd pass on it.

I think that car has much more than 40k on it, looks more like 140k! , i would prolly keep looking, a few more winters and you will have "flintstone brakes":(

So a little surface rust on the exhaust pipes and the diff cover and everyone thinks the car is a shitbox?

I'm not proud of it, but the motor in Phoebe looks a lot worse than this one because it's a DAILY DRIVER, not a garage queen that never sees rain. I don't spend countless hours every weekend detailing the engine compartment, but I've got over 150,000 trouble-free miles on it.

Guittard, overall that looks pretty good for a car that's spent its life in Fall Reev. Take it for a ride and see what you think. If you're going to make him an offer, I could come down on Sat or Sun for a second opinion.

I agree, just some surface rust on the pipes and diff. No big deal, if the car sits outside all year round and isn't oil treated this will happen but no biggie. Car looks clean other then that. Take it for a good test drive and you will see.

Good luck.

If you lived in a non snow state you would never buy a car that looked like that.

Really doesn't look that horrible to me. I mean the rust and corrosion isn't good, but I could definetly see that in a winter snow/salt state. The reason the engine looks so bad is it doesn't have the painted covers so more aluminum and someone cleaned it with something that oxidized it (all the white). The alternator is pretty rough, and I would imagine the engine wasn't cleaned as much as it should have been. The intake tube doesn't appear to ever have been conditioned, looks very dry. The differential cover is really rusty...that is my biggest concern. The only time I've ever seen that is in junkyards up in blocks...
