View Full Version : Cat delete + inspection

Just curious, does anyone have any problems with inspection and having their second set of cats deleted? I reside in jersey where we only have emissions, but I'm afraid that they'll do the mirror test and see that I have pipe that was obviously added in an not factory, and fail me for it even though I still have cats.
Anyone care to chime in?

I'd think you'd fail the sniff test without any cats.

It sounds like he is still running two cats, didn't delete them all.

Try taking it to a private inspection center. I don't think they even have a under car mirror nor do they care.
I also live in NJ

thats the backup plan, I just didn't feel like paying 70 bucks, but I guess I'll end up doing that...

Could always use the excuse the trans had to come out, they couldn't get the exhaust apart so they cut it to remove the trans cross member. lol
They are really checking to make sure you have nothing hanging and all pipes connected. If they ask about cats, you pop the hood and point to the primaries.

yeah it would be easy enough to say there was some rot, or other problem with the pipes, have to remove for something whatever. since you still have 2 cats

I guess I could just go to the state inspection and give that a shot, see if they say anything about it... I know with 96+ they just plug into the OBD II and check for codes and make sure all your emissions is still hooked up, thats it. I don't remember them ever doing the mirror test when I took the crown vic to get inspected...
Guess we'll see what happens

It has been my impression from both personal experience and stories from all over the place that 9/10 people that do inspections really don't actually care about the details. In fact, I think if there were not a serious chance for negative repercussions on themselves, I doubt they'd really care at all.
"Oh, exhaust 'ey? well yeh, lemme just tell you how important that is to me....."

Please let us know what happens. I also live in NJ and I was considering having my 2nd cats removed. I understand that it should still pass emissions but I didn't think about a visual.
My local shop just inspected my 72 Olds; holes, rust, bad front end and all. He just had to "sit on" the machine screwing with my carb until it passed. Paid the cost + his time.....worth it.

In N.C. as long as there is something that looks like a cat, you will pass the visual inspection. Most if not all techs are looking for something that looks like a cat... not how many you have. I bet every inspection tech out there does not know the Marauder is supposed to have 4 cats....
Everytime I take mine in for inspection all the techs stop doing other inspections and crowd around the car! I've only failed once... bad connection for the HID headlights = no lo beams.

Let me tell you the Great State of New Jersey is a mission to weed out every issue they can so you fail inspection. My '95 F-150 (only 79K) failed because of emission issues I aske the tester to switch the fuel tank from front to rear and re do the test, it passed? Front tank was at 1/4 rear was full? Wackey stuff in NJ guys & gals:lol:
Good news State inspection is "free" and it's only emissions now and every 2 years:up:
Ps to OP I use Bakers Basin on Route 1 in Lawrence Twp. (not trenton) as some call it.

I usually go to the one on Rt 130 in south brunswick, its relatively new and not many people go there

The last time I took one of my cars through inspection they would stick mirror underneath to look for cats, however when I took my uncles van through this august I didn't see them do that.
