View Full Version : Traction Control Disable

I am going to the same size tires all the way around, but I do not want to have to remember to hit the traction control button every time. An electrical engineer at work is going to help me put something together that will basically push the button "automatically" a few seconds after start up. I have seen some companies that have done this before, but they appear to be out of business (e-mail is dead). Has anyone here attempted/done this?
If we get this worked out, is anyone else interested in this. I do not know how much it will cost yet. It will not be very sexy (probably a soldered blob wrapped in insulation with wires coming out) so the cost will be minimal. My guess is in the $10-$15 range for parts.

What do you think?

Good luck!

I was able to disable the traction control via SCT tuner but it also disables the ABS as it lights up in the dash, plus the traction light & brake light illuminate.

This same problem also happened when I had the wrong size tires in the rear.

I just gave up and followed the tire specs guide posted in this forum & problem solved. No need to worry about pushing the button everytime you start the car.

I agree it would be nice and pay off in the long run to have same tires all around for rotation purposes.

There are a lot of wires to figure out. We mainly need to figure out if the switch is part of a network, or just a simple momentary switch with separate wires feeding the LED. Either one would explain the excessive number of wires. If it is on the CAN network we may not be able to do it.

Good Luck..... I'll continue to push the button... eventhough I have the correct tires installed.

Count me in. Excessive power and bald tires mean I have to push the button EVERY time I get into the car.

I'd love to have an auto-disable doohickey.

It's really not that hard.

Just need a relay, some resistors, wires, fuse amp and connect to IGN ON wire.

On the back of the switch, the GRAY wire is the power wire when the IGN is ON. WHITE/PINK is the signal off/on wire. Not sure what the ORANGE/BLACK or the two BLACK wires are for. I'll take a look at my wiring diagram book when I get home tonight.

Tire rotation solves the problem on the Marauder.
I wish my Marauder had excessive power but they did not have the motor from the Ford GT (40) available on the Marauder. And now the GT (40) and the Marauder are both dis-continued.

one of the Lincoln/Mercury techs at work suggested I get a grand Marquis ABS module from the junkyard and reprogram it to work on the Marauder. Of course you would need a Ford diag computer to do it. And you wouldn't have TC but still keep ABS

He is incorrect, you would need to change the ABS pump and module, as the cars with TC have an additional 2 solenoids in the pump for the TC feature.

Aah. That's probably the only way the junkyard sells it anyway since they are attatched. Maybe that's what he meant.

I looked into that, but it sounds like a royal PITA.

We have a parts list going , and have started assembling the circuit. My buddy was gone for the weekend, so we are going to finish it up early next week and test it. I will post a parts list and instructions once it has been tested.

It's still much easier to just push the TC button, it's so habit for me. Turn car on, seat belt on, TC off and OD off before I do anything else.

I have attached the scematic.

Vin goes to a switched power source (powered when key on, but not acc). I used fuse #14.

Vout connect to the grey wire going to the traction control switch.

The triangle connection goes to the black wire next to the grey wire (there are 2 black wires going to the switch - I think either would work but I have not checked).

Parts list:
Board - 1 needed - Mouser P/N 854-SB300 (www.mouser.com (http://www.mouser.com))
Capacitors - 1 to 4 needed (C1) (I used 2)- Mouser P/N 647-UVR1H101MPD1TA
Transistors - 2 needed(Q2&Q3) - Mouser P/N 512-KSC1845PTAQ
Diode (rectifier) - 1 needed (D1) - Mouser P/N 512-1N4004
Resistor - 1 needed (R2) - 10 KOHM 1/10 Watt minimim
Resistor - 1 needed (R3) - 220 KOHM 1/10th Watt minimum

The circuit basically holds down the button for a fixed time then releases. The button is still active, so in bad weather you can turn it back on. The more capacitors (wired in parallel) the longer it holds the button. each capacitor should give about 1.5-2 seconds of button push. I used 2 for about 4 seconds. If the button is held for more than 15 seconds, the light goes out and the button no longer works so do not exceed 6 capacitors. I will post pictures as soon as I get them downloaded.

pretty cool, i like making little dohickeys like this

One important note. I ended up adding a 3rd capacitor after about 6 months of use. The number of capacitors determines how long the button is "held in". Most of the time 2 was enough, but I eventually had to add a 3rd to make it 100% reliable.

Why that is a piece of work. Nothing better than being able to rotate tires. Time to take orders for a production run.

Maybe it would work to put a momentary relay tied to the seatbelt switch, so when you buckle up it turns the traction control off.

Struggling with the same size tire problem, but what if you have a car with no Traction control?

I take it the 03s are the only ones without TC...

Isn't there some late '03's that got some 2004 goodies/upgrades?
Hybrids that got built with whatever was on the shelf?
You know , the ones that came without the special porus ferrious axles and the unique "lights Out" headlamp display?
I take it the 03s are the only ones without TC...

Only the early 2003 MMs came without Traction Control. They are known as the '03 300A models. Sometime in the October 2002 timeframe, TC and some other differences were introduced into the production line. Those later cars are the '03 300B models. Those 2003 MMs do have TC. So do all of the 2004 MMs. Check out the "300A vs. 300B" thread (sticky) in the Community Forum for the other differences.

So would a 300A ECU and pulling the TC wiring work?
