I am considering rebuilding my 4r70w myself, have a manual for it. It doesn't look to hard, time, patients, information and it should be do-able. However, specialty tools, that is the hitch. Anyone tried this and did they need these speceialty tools which would negate the cost savings. I am strapped for cash. I seem to remember reading that it could be done without them.

You can probably do it without any special tools if you're mechanically inclined.
An OD Servo tool, clutch spring compressor, and a lip seal protector kit are all really useful and not incredibly expensive.

BY taking the tranz out your self that is a big savings in itself . Im not current with rebuild kit prices ,but im thinkin around 2 somethin for kit parts -[ internal hard parts extra ,converter extra expense also ] bench labor is minimal for a CARRY IN job.
GOOD LUCK on your venture

Ok, the current plan is to carry it in. I did purchase a rebuild kit but and balking at the expense of the tools. I have been limping around on a bad tranny for awhile now and it is time to do something. I have even considered converting to a 5 speed.
