View Full Version : DS axle leaking oil??

Went out this morning to check tire psi and looked at rear wheel and oil all on the inside of rim. I checked with a light and mirror and it appears to be the axle seal.

So is this the famous axle failure just happened? I drove it for about 15 miles and I did hear a slight noise. So does this mean new axles and a complete rebuild? If so who is a good source for 31 spline axles? If I have to rebuild I might as well upgrade while it is apart.

You may want to look at picking up a 2009 or newer axle from a crown vic police unit with 3:55 and lock with 31 spline axles ready to go for about 400-500 dollars. I did a search a few weeks back and found on in Charlotte for $450 dollars with 18k mile.

Could be just the seal. When mine went bad there was a humming sound. At first I thought it was the rear tires.

For about $100 bucks a side plus another $50 for fluid, you can do the rebuild with new seals, bearings and axles.

Thanks all for the help. I think I will just go for the whole rebuild. I don't have 4.10 gears so this is a good time and since the axle has to come out to replace the seal well that is a good time to upgrade to 31 spline. Then it will be ready for the supercharger.

That's a good start, don't forget big brakes, driveshaft, built trans and convertor, widened rear wheels etc........:D
