I don't want to beat a dead horse as I know I have read
previous posts about a tickety, tick sound coming from some
of our engines.

I have an 04 M/M with 2500 miles on it and started to notice this
ticking sound shortley after 1500K. It's loud enough for passengers
to hear from the inside the cabin but sounds smooth as silk when
standing outside. (Does'nt tick as much in park, only in drive while idling).

Under real slow acceleration, the noise is real annoying. When I punch
the pedal a little, it's not noticeble. I don't hear it at all over 1500-2000
RPM, and my car really scoots from either stand stills or triple digits, so
I think the engine is healthy.

Is it just the sound of the injectors, or something else that someone may
know about?

If you can't hear the noise with the hood open, you may just be getting normal engine noises transmitting through the firewall. You may have a grommet on the firewall that is out of place. Also a hose may be contacting the wiper cowling and transferring noise. Also try repositining the accelerator cable. Just a few thoughts...

You remind me of my first MM, it was like that for me. This wasn't such a hot topic a year ago, but I was getting those sounds too. Only from behind the wheel, when I sat on the passenger side, I couldn't hear them.

My dealer investigated it rather thoroughly, and the best explanation rhey could offer, was normal noise from a DOHC engine that I was not familiar with. They said that because the clearances were so tight between the heads and firewall, some sounds can telegraph into the cabin. Using a stethscope like device, they were able to distill the sounds, and what I was hearing match the fuel rail pulusing. I ignored it after that, and came to log 10K on the car without a problem before selling it, so, (shrug) I suppose they were right.

Sadly, there is another ticky ticky sound that does translate into serious problems, and I understand from others here that if you can detect it at idle from the L/F wheel well, but not elsewhere, have it checked out with a skilled mechanic. There may be valve problems with the 7/8 cylinder.

BTW, if your not already confused enough, there is a bonafide TSB for this noise on the SOHC 4.6L engines.

Every engine makes noise! ;)

David,

If you want to investigate further, get an engine stethescope ($11 at O'Reilly) and poke around the engine at idle... just watch out for anything moving of course ;). I found that the low rpm ticking I was hearing was the fuel rails/injectors. You'll probably be able to isolate the valve issue if that's the case.

If you think the sound is from the fuel system, you might try using a good fuel injection cleaner and see if that does the trick. There's some posts out there on who uses what.

I got rid of my intermittent low rpm ticks / hesitation after running through two tankfulls of gas over two days on a 500 mile road trip, so I can only guess that it was due to a low fuel pressure / partial clogging issue that was cleaned out by giving the gasoline detergents a chance to work away at it.

Hope its that easy for you!

OK, thanks guys for the input. I'll check the hoses and wires, and bring it to the dealer (jeez, I hate to do that) just to make sure it's nothing major.

Right now most 03 Cobra cars are covered for warranty on the drivers head, causing lifter noise, why Ford only changes one I will never know when the drivers side head is changed to a new casting, the Marauder uses the same head and this may be a issue with your car, I have not heard of Marauders having the same problem as the Cobra but I will make some phone calls.

Thanks Dennis, but no need. Hats off to our member Mr. Carfixer.
He recommended that I check the hosing/wiring near the wiper cowling.

I gently moved the wires from the cowling, and all of a sudden I hear a "ting".
Oh, Sit. It only turned out to be a small metal wire bracket hitting the ground.

Put it in my pocket and took a spin. No more ticking!!!! And I was definantely listening. Infact, at a stop light, she was so quite I thought she had stalled!!
THIS SITE ROCKS!!!!!!!
