View Full Version : "Budget" BBK Options

It's about time for me to do the brakes on my car and I was wondering if there are any "budget" big brake kits out there. What I mean is, do any other Fords come with bigger brakes that will bolt on to the Marauder with minimal work? Cobras? GT500s?? Like for my Lexus SC400, I can get the brakes from the MKIV Supra or Lexus LS400 and they bolt right on and are a big improvement. If there's an option out there for the Marauder, it would be awesome. I planned on going with stainless lines and slotted rotors but i really would like bigger rotors and a better caliper instead without spending $1500

None bolt right in. Zack had modified the caliper bracket to accept Mach 1/Cobra front calipers I believe. Other than that which some feel is unsafe, you either go BBK or stock size with upgrade pads, rotors and brake lines.
The SC-400 is basically a 4 door Supra. lol

Hmmm well that kinda sux. I wouldn't mind using an adaptor bracket, anyone else done it that way?
LOL, the SC can use a lot of Supra components but it's a 2-door (SC = sports coupe) and the 400 is V8 powered!! The SC300 is closer and sometimes called a Supra in a fat suit - heavier, non-turbo 2JZ.

DITTO - Supra and Lex 400 coupe share the same chassis

It wasn't an adaptor bracket, Zack had to modify the Marauder one.

The SC300 and GS300 both sport the 2JZ-GE engine, which was the same engine as found in the N/A Supra from 93-98. The SC400 and GS400 sported V8s, decidedly not Supra.

I think he modified the Mach1/Cobra caliper and opened up the 13" rotor spindle opening a hair. I think they are still on his car. Nice cheap way to obtain 13" rotors and a quality brake set.

It was either the MM one or the Mach 1/Cobra one. I was looking for the thread earlier but couldn't find it.
On NA cars a BBK is of course the best to go with but I think with good rotors matched with correct pads and the brake lines. For S/C cars its almost a must. Also a quality tire does wonders for braking as well.

My car is NA but I want a BBK for a couple reasons. Obviously, the benefit of improved breaking on such a large car is really important. Secondly, I think the car looks 1000Xs better with a BBK, i don't like how small the front brakes look, especially with the flashy chrome 18" wheels.
I really wish the Cobra brakes fit on our car, i can't see it being that difficult. I may do some experimenting

I know there is a thread on the Motor City site on the Cobra/Mach1 conversion where I believe the guy just slightly enlarged the caliper bolt holes off to the side a little and added some washers to shim it correctly and he too enlarged the Cobra/Mach1 rotor spindle opening.
Here it is. The ultimate budget 13" rotor upgrade and you can have the nice Cobra calipers too.

It's either on chicagosvt or modularfords.com.
Here is a thread from another guy who followed in Zack's footsteps.

I most likely would have gone the Cobra brake route if I had not bought the Wilwoods. How cool the Marauder would look with Cobra on the brake calipers.
Just like the 4th Camaros. You could use the Corvette brakes on the Camaro with Corvette inscribed on the brake.

Cheap? Liquid did a total parts cost for his 03/04 cobra brake conversion and it came out over 1000 dollars. IMO if your spending 1000+ to try and "make" it work, you might as well just buy the TCE kit, which was made to work, and has better calipers.

He also said that was before returning some stuff I believe and went with Ford parts. Could shop around and find aftermarket stuff cheaper.
If I had it to do over again, I would have bought the following components instead of the hodgepodge I ended up with:
M-2320-C FRPP loaded caliper assembly with mounting brackets
27005 Brembo OE rotors
TCE Performance stainless braided lines
M10x1.0 speed bleeders
Grade 10.9 hardware from Frentz
Total 374+140+155+12+16=about $700 for parts
So far I am into this project for about $1360, but that will dip down below $1000 once I make some returns... anyone want to buy the M-2320-AF loaded calipers that I'm not going to use? Limited edition, $309 shipped; same price I paid. If no takers, I'll try selling them on eBay to avoid the 15% restocking fee.

Not sure if this would work but just an example.
Could search on modularfords or another Mustang forum for take offs or used calipers.

There's a couple of nice red Cobra sets on eBay now for about $350 plus shipping. Buy some rotors from R1 Concepts for another $150+\- pads SS brake lines from TCE $200+/- and you'd have a nice brake set.

Yes sir. I wasn't going to mention that since it's not my project!! Hopefully he will finish it soon. I am really interested to see how they work out!!
And how they compare to my Wilwoods.

Oh do tell!! I saw you two chit chating about them Sunday while I was dying of pizza overload.
I think it's a great way to get way better braking performance for a lot less.
