Use of Chains for snow

I did a search and didn't find much.

Have any of you ever ran chains on your MM's? If so which ones/types.

I'm taking the MM to WY for x-mas and have Nitto 420's on the back, they work fine in light snow around town but I'll be in a area where SHTF with snow alot.

I've never used chains. But my Hankook snow tires kick ass in the snow. Front and back. Mounted on aluminum Grand Marquis rims.

No on the MM. I haven't used snow chains on a car since 1978 when I was in Germany. Had to put 'em on to get to the office and had to pull them off by lunch time 'cause the roads were plowed.

A good snow tire package would be a much wiser bet IMHO.

The problem with chains is that there has to be a 2-3" layer of snow on the road for them to be worthwhile and not beat your suspension to death or vibrate you out of the seat.

Most main and secondary roads get cleared fairly quickly. Chains and bare or near bare pavement don't work well. Chains won't last too long on bare pavement and if a link or two pops, you will destroy your fender well and quarter panels before you can get stopped. Chains may only be needed to get you to the first secondary road.

From what I recall, chains are sold by tire size and generally fit a range of sizes/widths for a given wheel diameter. I really don't see them much anymore except maybe for commercial trucks and I suspect those are for "emergency" extraction purposes.

FWIW --- If you gotta deal with snow .... get a good snow tire package.
