I have a magnetic oil drain plug. It's always clean. Thank goodness! ;) I'd worry more about aluminum.

If your engine has particles to be removed from the oil magnetically, you are in bad shape.
Just change the oil with a good premium oil and filter every 3-5K and you'll be fine.
I'm @ 117K and Have been blown for almost 90K

Why so often? Do you race alot, or do you do a lot of severe service driving?
Best way to schedule oil changes is by oil analysis. Time or mileage based changes aren't really a cost effective way to go.

^^^what Doomie and the Cheesehead said^^^
RP every 2k is an enormous waste.
While filter magnets are harmless, they're generally considered to be a gimmick. If you have that much ferrous wear metal that one is necessary, then your motor is pretty well shot in the first place.

I have never used one. The oil filter drain is a better deal IMHO.

I have a filterMAG on my oil filter. Also don't use K&N oil filters, they are waste money and I have one fall apart some on me, I was extremely lucky it did not damage anything. Stick with Motorcraft filters. Also no need to change your oil that often, 5k miles is the normal interval, if you do a lot of heavy footing and stop and go traffic you could do less. I've been doing 5k mile intervals since I got my car at 40k miles, closing in on 170k miles with a stock motor.

Like everyone else has said... 5k oil & filter changes with good quality oil & filters are the way to go.
Spend the $25.00 for an oil analysis.
The kits are free.

if youre really thinking of a filter magnet, you can make one thats a lot stronger for cheaper......neodynium(sp) magnet...also called "rare earth magnets" can be found online and all you'll have to do is stick them where you want...either the filter or drain plug. a 1"diameterX 1/2" thick disc magnet would be super strong...and all you would ever need.--whitey

I would put a filter magnet right under my purchase for the golden gate bridge!
A total waste of money! as previously stated if you have that much metal debris in your oil, your going to be looking for a new engine.

The filter Mag will not hurt anything. If you want install it and have a piece of mind. Some run magnetic oil drain plugs and is that needed?

I also use a FilterMag, have been for years.
Suppose I should buy an oil filter cutter to see if it working?

Jim, I've seen pix of cut-open filters where a magnet was used. There is usually a faint outline of the magnet on the inside of the filter can, but it's generally accepted that anything attracted to the magnet would have gotten trapped by the filter media anyway, as oil flow is from the outside in. IOW, they certainly can't hurt but prolly do a lot of nothing.

OK, just throwing this out there. If the MM is an weekend ride only, and your using Mobil 1, and you have more time on the clock than mileage, how much time should go buy before you change the oil? I was thinking something like 8 to 12 months? Too short or to long?

My rule of thumb is what ever mile interval you choose, or 1 year(assuming you run full synthetic) whichever comes first

OK, same in my book too, just checking up on it again "thanks".....:D

With synthetic oils they do not wear or break down over time, only from use.

Condition based, not time-based oil change frequency is what you should be using to determine oil change intervals. "Time" does not break down oil, especially synthetic or semi-syn motor oil.
I only change my oil once or twice a year!
Only put 4 -6K miles on the car a year! If that much!

Although synthetic oil doesn't "go bad" just sitting there, unless the car is stored in a climate-controlled environment, condensation still builds in the crankcase. Moisture combines with combustion byproducts to create acids. This is the primary reason for a time-based limit.

My point exactly! amsoil also says the same thing as it relates to time, and oil sitting, not a good thing for any oil, or car for that matter
I had a saturn that set for a few years, and i had to rplace the entire fuel system which turned to varnish!
the oil had a ton of water in it! so much for time isnt a factor!
