I have the opportunity to get some good tires for cheap from my friend. They are size 285-35-18. Could I run these without any trouble or modification on the rear. He also has some 255-40-18. Which would be better? I know the speedometer will be off but I plan to get a tuner sometime in february so I am not too worried about that.

I have mounted and drove with 305's in stock wheels no problems. Just don't roadrace.

What you can get cheap is not tall enough. You'll need at least a 50 series to get by without any ABS/TC issues.

What kind of issues will I run into? I thought with a wider tire, I could run a lower series. Please inform me.

In order to keep the rake and have the ABS module not go bonkers, You'll need tires comparable to stock in height.

No problem w/ABS - problem w/traction control if you have it.

bingo. ran into this a month ago. posted a thread in brakes section.

incorrect re ABS. I ran a 40 series tire up front both the ABS and brake light came on over 60 mph and would stay on until the car was turned off. smaller diameter at 60 mph had the ABS sensors going haywire because the front was moving "faster" than the rears.

can't respond re TC b/c I don't have it.

I think th OP is running stock size front & smaller dia rear or wants to run smaller dia front & rear. In the first case he should have no problem w/ABS - I run 255/45 on all four w/no issues. If you have too much difference in dia I guess there is an issue w/ABS as you yourself have experienced. Too little difference or the same dia is not a problem for non traction control models.

285/30r18 = 24.73in dia
235/50r18 = 27.25in dia
Difference = 9.25% (2.52in) favoring the front tires

and now the stock setup
245/55r18 = 28.61in dia
235/50r18 = 27.25in dia
Difference = 4.76% (1.36in) favoring the rear tires

Just rears
245/55r18 = 28.61in dia
285/30r18 = 24.73in dia
Difference = 13.57% (3.88in) decrease in wheel diameter

Now that I see the #'s - even if it would work I would strongly recomend against it. Bad handling characteristics w/taller tires on front!

I run the stock KDWS fronts and Nitto 295/45-18 rears on stock rims. No TC and zero ABS probs.

Remember the second # is a % of the width. If you have a 285/35-18 the 35 is 35% of 285mm.
