You're going to get some raspiness no matter what system you go with, 4.6L DOHC engines don't do "deep;" just the nature of the beast.

A couple recommendations:

SW headers, they fit real well, provide good performance, SW is a vendor here, and IIRC, they're on sale right now.

Stay with 2 1/2 pipes, 3" isn't going to do any more for you, and with decreased back pressure, may even lose a bit of HP.

Res-delete tips won't do anything for performance, and only minimal change in sound (more tone than volume).

Think over your choice of "loud" carefully. If you drive the car alot, especially at highway speeds, the drone gets real old. Check out this thread for options, or PM vkirkend for more info.

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=72389

Another option if you want "hey look at me" loud on demand is to go with electronically switched exhaust cut-outs. Best of both worlds; quiet for peaceful driving, loud when you want it.

Everything he said^^^ 18" case Magnaflows or stock mufflers is about your only choice to silence the raspiness at 2000 RPMs and up. Been there, done that.

+1 on the cut outs. Use mine ALL the time!

Here is a copy of my Dnyo run with the Dynamat VT's. The AERO's were too loud for me. But if you're younger and want that type of thing it's up to you but some have replaced the areos after a short time. I like the fact that my car is quiet until I want to make noise....

If you do headers you won't be doing a rear cat delete cause you'll only really have room for two. lol

Get the headers and then contact Greg at Mandrel Bending Solutions in Pasadena, MD. He has worked on several members cars including mine. He can get the headers installed and then fab up a complete system for you, all you need is two cats, two mufflers and a set of tips along with the new bolts for the headers and some $$$ and you'll be good to go.

3 inch pipe on a N/A car! :nono:

You will lose back pressure and have no top end for sure!!!

Don't do it!!!

As far as mufflers go, what sound are you looking for???

But according to you guys aeros are no longer being made!

Is this right or wrong???

You guys like Flowmasters with headers and high flow cats? Really? On both my Marauder and my Towncar (Kooks and SW, respectively) they were so freaking loud that my head hurt after driving the cars for more than just a few minutes. Might as well run open headers.

Magnaflow all the way. That's my vote.

^^^^ +1 ^^^^ guys.

I'm still dumping into OEM mufflers. I like it quiet. Been toying with the idea of cut outs to make noise when I wanna have some fun, best of both worlds then, IMO.

Please don't misunderstand me, I like my exhausts loud. Most of my friends think my cars are all way too loud, even for muscle cars. So when I say that Flowmasters with headers are too loud, I really mean it. And there's also a quality of sound issue as well, not just volume. I didn't like the hollow, raspy tone I got on either my MM or my LTC. With the Magnaflows they're loud but not over the top, and the sound is deep and mean without being harsh.

Now, I have Flowmaster 40s on my Crown Vic, which has stock manifolds and cats dumping into a custom cat-back 2.5" dual system with h-pipe and they sound amazing. But with headers? No thanks.

You can't compare the Flow's to the Aero's. Two different means of construction. Flows use a thinner metal than Aeros so you will get a bit more raspy/hollow like sound. Flows are chambered and Aeros are straight thru like Magna's, but without any packing to blow out so once broke in, they hold their sound for life of car unlike Magna's. I've had all three albeit without headers, but for pure tone quality thru out the rpm range i definately prefer my current Aeros. Especially for long trips.

You mean for tone of the sound? I have h-pipes on my Vic and my LTC, but an X-pipe on my Marauder. Definitely notice a difference in sound. The h-pipe seems to yield a more muscle car sound. The x-pipe sounds like a freak'n race car. :)

The "X" produces more HP & speed over the "H". I didn't think it would but in doing research for the exhaust I want to pair up with T242, the data proved otherwise. I can't argue with the data so I'm going with an "X". Can't wait for spring!!!:D

I went with a Mac Pro-chamber mid pipe, best of both the X and H pipes. My car's still got the OEM mufflers, but with the rear cat delete, high flow cats and the mid-pipe, the exhaust note, while still subdued, is much deeper.

I had an X-Pipe with my Magnaflows and it sounded like two "RICERS" side by side.....high pitched.....raspy and HORRIBLE.....IMHO!!:argue: :mad2:

An H-Pipe gives you that "Ole Skool" rumble and a much deeper sound!!:bows:

I would not go back to an X-Pipe if it made 50 more HP unless it was strictly for a racing application!! Tests have shown a properly placed X-Pipe makes a little more power than an H-Pipe at the top end but not very much??

GOOD LUCK!!

I'm running Magnaflow 14" with the 4" tips and stock cats and the car is pretty loud and I has nice deep tone with it too. So once I did so modifying to the exhaust two Magnaflow cats and 2.5" piping and H-pipe it's gonna be louder. Magnaflow all the way in my book. 👍👍

magnaow makes a muffled x pipe! I have it. highly recommend. power and quiet. dynomax super turbos plus LTH - no rasp.

I don't know how effective it would be for sound deadening in the exhaust, but have you considered some sort of mid-muffler? Possibly put in a pair of glasspacks before your regular mufflers as sort of resonators to bring down the rasp?

I know they can be had for fairly cheap (pretty sure a pair can be had for cheaper than one Flowmaster muffler), but I don't know how effective they would be at bringing down the rasp level.

Another possibility that a member here has done was using a dual-in/dual-out muffler as your "h-pipe."
