My "air bag" light is "on". gives code 2-1--went to dealer--was informed the "$685 module" need replacement--checking the parts catalog, the passenger module fits the description--dropped the glove box and found a module with the following part #3W7Z54044A74 AAA . Can a novice R & R ? Is there programming necessary after installation. Is there another source for these modules besides the dealer. Oh yes, they charged me $110 to analyze the system ???? Any help will be greatly appreciated--gotta protect the wife. Maury

That part lists for $766.96. There are 2 left in the country.
I would see if anyone here has a non-deployed one for sale cheaper than the Ford place.

It is possible that the dealer that Maury was at was going to buy the module from one of the dealers plus shipping and pass this deal at a wholesale price.

The info you gave makes me think I should go ahead and have my dealer order the module--gotta have one ASAP for wife's safety--the weather is getting nasty and accidents do happen. I have one question----with hundreds of thousands of police crown vics with air bags on the road, how can Ford not keep a supply of vital safety equipment modules in stock:confused::confused: Don't they have side air bags? I'm going to bite the bullet and go for it.Thanks for all the help, Maury

Without looking up the part #, I am assuming that you are talking about the DERM module, that is in the middle of the car under the dash? Or, the air bag assembly on the passenger side? They will be the same for a Crown Vic, the DERM is specific to the car if it has side airbags.

I find it appalling that every time one of us has a less-popular part go bad, Ford's computer shows it as discontinued or only 2 left in the whole country. Did their supplier forget how to make them?

Hmm my light started flashing then remaining lit. Sounds like a lotta coin for that module. Heck my air suspension light started coming on too! Time to retire her from dd duty!

Just got back from the dealership--the defective part is the Restraint Control part # 3W7Z148321 BA. They found one in the warehouse in Detroit and I will have it after Christmas. The price will be around $325 instead of over $ 700 :D. Now , the question is , would the bags still deploy without it?. Also, Brian could you check availability of :
Passenger Module---3W7Z54044A 74 AAA
Driver Module-------3W3Z54043813 AAA.
Iwould like to say---if you are not getting the light---DON'T order one--leave the few left for those who are in jeopardy. Something is going to have to be done--through the NHTSB or some other way, to force Ford to continue to produce these critical safety components. The later model CVs and GMs have side air bage as we do--why can't we use the same units?
MERRY CHRISTMAS Maury

Well at least we know where we stand and what Ford thinks of our safety--sad state of affairs. Anybody else have any ideas or comments:confused: Maury

--Am keeping passengers in the back seat til then.
Just so you know, if there is a fault with any of the airbag system, NONE of them will work in the event of a collision.
Even though the fault is with the passenger side, none of the bags will deploy if there is a reason for them to (i.e. a crash).

I thought that would be the case--therefore, no front seat passengers and as little driving as possible, Maury

Took the MM to the dealer today to have the passenger air bag light put out. This is what they did:
Replaced Restraint Control Module Part # 3W7Z*14B321*BA Sensor ASSY-AIR BAG. Since it was not warranteed, I brought the part home. Can this unit be repaired ? List price was $ 356.47 and was shipped from Detroit. I hope this helps those driving around with the light---the code was 2-1. The tech said the system was completely inop when the light was on. Oh yes, it cost me $110 for system troubleshoot to find the defect. Installation labor was $ 110. So, figure about $ 775 for the fix. I was told that this part was very scarce, so I hope they can be repaired. Now Ginny can ride in the front seat again;) Maury
