Will a rear from an 07 cv fit an 03 mm? I found one with a 3.55 locker at a great price. Also does this rear have 31 spline axles?

The CV axle may bolt in but the Marauder originally came with the wider Town Car rear axle.
I'm not so sure about that, mine has 31 spline P71 axles in it.

Steve Babcock mentioned at MV9 that the MM either came with or was slated to come with the TownCar rear end. Something to do with getting the tires to sit right at the fender wells. :)

My statement was based on this post by the Marauder project manager:
Marc, we were very fortunate to have a good base in the Crown Vic Interceptor. We make 70K units annually, been around a long time and been tuned well for police pursuit handling.
So, we started with the Interceptor front springs, shocks, bushings, swaybar, etc. On the rear, I wanted to push the tires out as far as possible, and wanted to have wider tires, so used the Town Car wider rear axle. Wanted to have even more control and be flatter in the corners, so added the Limo rear air suspension (believe we used the Limo rear staybar, too).
Then the tires...wanted BFGs...right brand for this car. BFG was just about to come out with the g-Force T/A KDWS (Key Dry Wet Snow). Had the right attributes we wanted. One objective was to get .86g on the 200' skidpad and this tire had good promise in helping to deliver that. But yet, this is an everyday driver family car, too, so wanted all-season capability...not a summer tire. This is a W-rated tire...160mph capability, with all the associated handling / cornering performance benefits.
Also, from a side view, I wanted to fill up the wheelwells with tire, and wanted to have a rake to the car attitude, with larger tires on the rear. The car was to be reminiscent of what we did to our hot rods in the 50's and 60's, and larger rear tires was part of that. In fact, today, most serious RWD performance cars have larger rear tires. So on the rear we did 245/55WR18 and on the front 235/50WR18. We then lowered (body-to-chassis, not body-to-ground) the car about about a half inch.
Lastly, all the above...shorter, stiffer sidewalls, stiffer staybars and busings...caused the car to turn-in too quickly for most drivers, so we had to retune the steering gear.
Oh yes, we were able to get .91g's on the skidpad (same as one of the buff mags got, too).
Hope that answers your question, Marc

However, I also came across this thread while trying to find the correct answer:

Year for year, the Town Car uses the same rear axle as the CV, GM and MM.
The rear axle housing was unchanged for 92-97, then updated w/ watts and parallel control arms and a little more width in 98, and for 03+ the shock mounts were moved over and the axle was made wider.
If the Town Car axle was a different width, how could it use the same axle service kit/axle shafts for the bearing wear TSB as the cv/gm/mm? http://www.crownvic.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/default/wink.gif http://www.crownvic.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/default/wink.gif
The Town Car limos used a 31 spline axle, however they were also the same width. (The Marauder does not use a 31 spline limo axle)
In 2005 all panthers went to the 31 spline axle, the 28 spline was dropped from most, if not all Ford 8.8" models.
So.... it appears that Steve Babcock was incorrect and the axles are in fact the same.
Carry on.

The bean counters @ Ford nixed the idea.

He specifically mentioned the Towncar rear at MV9. You may be right about the beancounters but he just said what he said two months ago so we may have a mystery till the next time we can corner him and pick his brain. He'll probably show at MV10 as he lives in the area.:)

I wonder if they were considering using the '98-'02 TC/Limo axle? The different shock location might have nixed the idea. Different offset wheels would have increased the costs also.
