Wondering what technique you guys use to remove and replace your oil filter?

Just did an oil change and noticed how tight everything is.

Do you guys like to install/remove from the top or bottom?

Use a strap type oil filter wrench, plier type, or a socket type?

Anyone ever try relocating their oil filter?

I like the socket type. Ford filters have there own bumps on bottom so has to fit that (get metal, not plastic one). Frams take a different socket. Do no know about other brands,

I use a filter removal/installation tool from Advance Auto Parts, socket style. However there are several different flute count models within the same brand/size/PN.

Get your new filter and fit it to the cup in the tool and see that it fits tightly and doesn't spin.

I put the front end on ramps and, from below, just loosen the filter with the tool but finish removing by hand. Catch the spillage in a pan as you remove the old filter. Be sure old gasket comes out with old filter. Sop up spillage. You are, at this point finished with the tool.

Prelube new filter gasket. Prefill the new filter to a little below the threads, this will take several fills as the filter element soaks up the oil. Wait a few minutes after each fill. Then screw on new filter, take care not to strip threads (be gentle), and tighten snugly with your hand.

Clean up.

Bring car to Pat and for a free installation check and test drive.

I remove mine from the top with a cup adapter that fits over the end of the filter.

I use about 1/2 can of brake clean for cleanup after.

I also use a Fumoto valve in place of the oil pan plug.

At times I use a strap tool to remove the oil filter. I do my oil changes at work on a lift, so it is removed from underneath.

I don't know the part number, but get the plastic splash guard/drain that Ford forgot to put on the Marauder. It clips right on to the power steering lines on the rack and pinion.

Ford knew that removing the oil filter on the 94 TBird 4.6 was going to be a messy job, so they designed a small spout at the lowest point in a cross member under the block.

Oil from the filter comes out of the filter (filter has to be maneuvered to be completely removed), flows down the brace to the lowest spot, which is the spout, and drips into a pan placed under the motor..

It's still a messy job (tight space), but the spout helps somewhat.

Nothing could be easier than removing the filter on my Galaxie 390.

I think I still have mine. Took it off so I could install a low oil pressure buzzer.

Be advised that the plastic drain deflector thingy is only held on by a couple of flimsy clips. I USED to have one on Phoebe. One day I went to change the oil and it was gone. I can only assume it became dislodged going through a puddle or something.

Those of you lucky enough to never have to drive your car in rain, sleet, snow, wind, darkness, or temps below 70° don't have to worry about this...
