i was at the station and i left the car started for about 10 min. left the station looks at the temp gauge and it was up top. a sec later it drop down back at the center mark quickly. when i turn the ac on the fan goes on and off. whats strange is the temp gaude fell down quickly like its a bad sensor or something

Sounds like air in the system.

A good burp is in order.

ohh and the temp gauge fell as i was makeing a right turn.maybe that made the coolant start to flow?

Burp the system.

Yes. Revving the engine throws the coolant a bit more violently than idle also. Yes you need to burp the engine.

+1 on reische t-stat.

This burping the system is a pain in the azz!!!

How does air get into the system when previously was cooling just fine????

Ok time to pass some gas. I could see if I did a coolant flush but I didn't?. Guess I'm going to now

My car never had the coolant flushed. Right before I was going to start my Eaton swap at about 60,000. My car started to do the overheat needle drops down symptoms. During the swap. Changed the fluid, new T-stat and burped the system. Haven't had a overheat problem yet.

Burp it yo.

After removing a couple COTs and seeing how the O-rings degrade over time (there's 5 O-rings just in the COT!), I bet a very tiny amount of vapor escapes when hot and a little air goes in to replace it when the system cools. Over time it adds up.

Thank you for the information and response.

Makes perfect sense.

Never understood why......until now

if vapor escapes you didnt burp it correctly! 5 o-rings, gee my COT only has 2... how much hp for the other three? :)

There's two O-rings in the center x-over section. Your COT is actually two pieces. One O-ring is on the fill cap/bolt. One on each leg that goes into each head. That's 5 right there silly. If you add up all the other hose clamps and such, as much as we'd like to believe it's a full closed loop system, there is escaping gases/vapor as the car ages. Losing a tiny bit over time on an ageing car has nothing to do with improper burping.

Didn't think of the fill cap. Why are there 2 o-rings inside the tube - Ive never replaced these. Is there ever a reason to take the tube apart?

The most important ones (most likely to leak) are the ones going into the heads - ask me how I know!

Echo others experience; air in system. Had to have a thermostat replaced last fall and even though got into Ford dealer on a Saturday and got stat done, next day or so temp gauge would show "hot" when engine was NOT hot and would settle down only to spike again. After a sleepless night got back in and sure enough stat was replaced without clearing air from the system. Happy going since but learned my lesson to ask shop to be sure system is cleared if opened for work.

And make sure your o rings are good
