What you hear is the air suspension compressor coming on to pump up the air bags. Some are noisier than others.

They tend to get loud when they are on the way out.

i just put one in about 3 hours ago.....seems just as loud as right before the stock one went up.... marauder410, to be 100% sure its your compressor kicking on....open your door, and put a foot on the ground....you will feel the car rising up when you hear the noise.--whitey

hey guys, if the compressor gets way, way louder and rougher sounding from one day to the next, is it safe to say its dying and needs replacing. Its so noticeably different sounding than it ever was before, you cringe when you hear it.

If it's that big a difference suddenly, then I suggest you turn the system off before it collapses and leaves you stranded somewhere. It's happened to Phoebe twice, but fortunately not far from home.

got it, thanks. i read how an overfilled washer fluid tank spills onto the compressor and kills it. pretty sure that happened to me. hopefully the weather cooperates enough for me to replace in my driveway.

My compressor died today. The one hour ride home was torture! I should have noticed when my co-worker mentioned that he likes my "slammed ride". I didn't think nothing of it initially since I have Eibach front springs. When I pulled over to check it out, the rear tires were tucked in the fenders pretty deep. Did I damage anything with this ride home? Do you think that I need to replace the air springs also? I forgot to mention that the compressor was pretty loud just before it died.

More questions.... According to AdvanceAutoParts.com, Arnott P-2234 is shown to NOT be a fit for the Marauder. Has anyone used this successfully? It appears from the Suncore website that they rebuilt OEM units. Which do you think is a better choice; the Suncore or the Arnott compressor? I am very tempted to go with a coil conversion, any recommendations?

Thanks RF! Good to know of working options.

Oddly, my pump is working sporadically. What do you think of this?

I have gone on errands where pump works when I first start car, air shocks are inflated as normal. On return trip, the pump won't come on, the air suspension light comes on and air springs are deflated.

Possibly just a bad ride-height sensor. Climb under there and disconnect the linkage and see if the sensor arm operates smoothly or is stiff/jerky. If it's smooth, then most likely the compressor is intermittent.

Thanks again RF, I'll check that out.

Derek 'Comin-n-hot' gave me a good ride height sensor to try off of his car. The original air pump in along with the known good sensor, it is all good now! I'm a very happy now. There wasn't any binding in the link to the suspension.

I have had the unfortunate pleasure of owning to vehicles with the air suspension set up. a 94 town car and my 03 marauder. Dont get me wrong I love my marauder but I think the air suspension was the worst thing ever thought of. Its nice when it works but its unreliable and very expensive if your bags go bad. This happened to my town car and I went with the coil conversion. Turned out great and it only cost me around $500. Where as replacing your bags is $600 just for the bags.

My marauder seems to be very choicy on when the compressor wants to turn on and when it doesnt. I plan to go with the coil conversion again pretty soon. Hope this info helps out.

Where as replacing your bags is $600 just for the bags.Where did you get that cost? Arnott sells a complete kit (http://www.arnottindustries.com/part_FORD_Air_Suspension_Parts _yid1_pid9.html) with new bags, solenoids, and compressor for under $400.

Thats what annoys me the most on mine, very choicy on when it comes on, about half them time it will come on at startup about half the time not. Then recently its started coming on instead while driving...thats really annoying, driving down the street with the compressor going.

quick update on my dead compressor. after debating on swapping to shocks, i ordered the Arnot unit. installation was quick. i drilled holes in the bottom pan for better drainage, highly recommend. new unit is super quiet, very satisfied. when doing this job, the washer tank does not to be removed. just unbolt and move to side. the manual says to remove it but theres plenty of room to work around it.

$500 for 2 coil springs? $600 for two bags? Where the heck are you buying this stuff? Even with someone robbing you on labor it shouldn't cost anywhere near this much. Arnott is the way to go.
