View Full Version : Dead Battery Question

Went out last Friday to take advantage of dry pavement with no salt, the battery was as dead as Dillenger :bigcry: Called Mercury roadside assistance, they had someone there in 40 min. I left my radar detector on for a week, so it drained the battery. I had it plugged into the power-point in the console. My question is this, isn't there a "timer" that shuts down accessories after a pre-set length of time on the MM? I assumed(wrongly!) that the power-point was included in this shutdown. Obviously not,, so make notes folks or suffer the same fate as me :nono:

I prefer the accessory power to stay on when the car is off. I have a solar charger that plugs into the lighter plug and keeps my battery up.

Not only will unplugging it and putting it away keep it from draining the battery...it will also keep your car from being broken into if you have something someone wants. Unlocking the door won't set of the alarm, and I don't think breaking the window will either.

Opening the door in any way after it has been locked for 10 minutes will set off the alarm. Unless the door is opened with the keypad, key or remote.

We have the power saver feature for trunk / hood / interior lamps etc., but I never tried the power point. Thanks for letting us know. BTW: Why haven't you hard wired your detector? And, if you are parking it extended amounts of time over the winter, why haven't you purchased a trickle charger????

Automatic trickle chargers are a must for extended parking in cold weather. Sears has a wonderfull unit for $29. It is small, automatic, and has a harness that can be hardwired to the battery terminals, and a quick disconnect plug to remove the charger when you want to cruise.

Thanks Barry, I do have a trickle charger, but so far, I am able to drive it at least once a week. I am going to wait until I purchase a Valentine before I consider the hard-wire route. :banana2:

Mine alarm doesn't go off at all unless I set it off with the remote...
Haven't broken a window though. Owners manual says it's just a deturant and that as long as no one has a key that fits with the correct chip in it, I'm fine. Or something like that.

Oops!!!

Being an ass is what I'm good at:D :help:

NO OFFENSE TO MERCMAN but young people (such as myself!) aren't the only people who assume or think quickly.
