View Full Version : Wipers only work on high

It started snowing today so I wanted to knock the snow off the windshield but when I turned the wipers to the first one nothing happened. So kept turning the switch until I got the last one and they worked. Also the washer fluid doesn't come out anymore. Could the switch be going bad or is it the wiper motor.

Thanks

The wiper motor has had water seep into it and there is corrosion. I replaced the motor after trying the repair to the circuit board inside the motor. It happens when the cowl drain under the hood gets enough debris in it that it overflows when it rains and seeps into the motor base. Sux manually timing the wipers to stop at the perfect spot. You get good at it quick though!

Yep, the typical "Wacky Wipers" issue. Wipers only on the high setting is a dead give-away symptom. Most common in MMs that live outside and collect debris and stuff. Eventually the debris will clog the drain below the wiper motor and short out the electronics in the wiper module. If Richie04's fix doesn't work, you'll have to replace the wiper motor, the pigtail and enlarge the drain hole. I am on my 3rd wiper motor (maybe 4th, I forget how many times this has happened to me). :o

Doesn't sound like the wacky wiper issue. Since the washers have also quit I would suspect the stalk as going out. I don't have my wiring manual handy, but find out which wires test before ripping the wiper motor out.

Yea well my car sits all day long cause I drive my work truck and I don't drive my car unless I really have too. So I should change the wiper motor and call it a day or do i have another alternative?

You didn't check the link in Racer X's post did you? That's a possible fix. Might also want to check in to TMF recommendation too.

Wiper washers can act up as well. Mine alternated from no washers, to continual operation.

I'd bet wacky wipers, especially if the car sits outside alot.

Well I got off early today to mess with my wipers on a this day before it rains tomorrow. And I think I got kind of lucky, I had a hard time of trying to get the wipers off so I said screw it I'll come back to them. Took the cover off where the wiper motor is and saw all the leaves and dirty that was caked up in there. Cleaned all that really good and everything works again. Washers works and the wipers work on settings 👍👍

If the motor has been underwater you are still probably going to have issues at some point.

Too late... The wipers just came on by them selves extinguishing the washer fluid. FML I guess I'll have to get to work on taking the motor out over the weekend.

Well guess I'll try the RacerX solution of taking it apart and see if that will help b4 I buy a new one.

Don't wait too long to do it. I had the same issues, ended up frying the motor and had to replace it.

Curious.....How'd you make out? I just started having the exact same problem you described. I'm wondering what I should tackle 1st?

Wipers are fine now after cleaning out all the dirt and mud everything works fine. Wipers do not come on automatically anymore with all the speeds working just fine.
