How much does it cost to install 4.10's on average not including the price of the gears? The reason I ask is that I have to go pick up my Marauder which I needed new Parking brake pads installed, rear seals, and I ordered 4.10 gears for it. I supplied those parts and the mechanic said I needed new bearings while he was doing the gears. Long story short when its all said and done I now have a $1150 bill!!!!! Sounds very expensive to me

Should be about $350 labor to install
Parking brake assy, shoes pads is I think $190
Master Bearing kit is like $50 for all bearings.
Gear Oil? - $30 good stuff $10 Cheap stuff
----------------------------------------------
$620.00 (you are over charged about $500 I'd say)

Gear oil? Use a good Syn gear oil. Or use dino oil and drain it after 500 if you want to be anal. Make sure you break the gears in - Drive for 10 minutes normally let cool for 30. Do that process 2 more times.

$250 is a fantastic deal (you paid that about 3-4 years ago)

I think the OP was overcharged.

Damn, I paid WAY too much for mine. I want to say that the quotes I got from all around were consistent though, so maybe it just costs more to do down here. Oh well....

Do you have a detailed bill of everything broken down? Hope you at least have a 4.10 gear tune to enjoy that rapage.

 Get a itemized bill. He charged you full retail on whatever parts he supplied.

He put in a whole new rebuild kit in the rear and he overall did a very quality job but there was $800 worth of labor!!!

I paid $300 in labor and supplied all my own parts but I also had a fellow MM owner who is a Ford mechanic do all the work for me.
$180 for new Ford Racing 4.10 gears
$50-60 for the gear oil
$180 for a new 28-spline Ford Racing diff
$100 for the Ford master install kit

Where I live is a summer resort area, with many either retired or wealthy folks (I'm neither) so prices of EVERYTHING are higher. This is one of the reasons I try to do as much work as possible myself, but some things are just best left to the professionals...like gear installs. I think the OP did pay a bit too much, but we aren't all lucky enough to live where labour is cheap.

$800 is the amount I was quoted last week to get the rearend overhauled with cobra clutches, and new bearings not supplying any of the parts.

Same shop, Gearworks in Clearwater has charged me $400 to do a gear install with new bearings all the way around (I supplied all the parts) on both my MMs.

Ya but the Cape is a great place to live and well worth the extra expense. Not sure if I'll ever move back but I miss it all the time and always look forward to visiting the fam. Summer camping in area 7 up in Nickerson is the best.

I'm not a machine LOL! It does feel weird handing over the keys though... I limit myself to axles, outer bearings, and clutches though. I don't have the knowledge or tools for setting up a rear. How much am I gonna hate the 4.30's I wonder?

BTW, his extra cost is okay with me. He still has to do the outer bearings, and he is well worth his money.

Who knows, maybe I'll even get a price for the cobra swap and head/cam work? Been very busy, and I HATE working in the cold, especially if I'm not MAKING money!:D

I'm curious myself. ;)

I'm lucky to have a resident rear end specialist somewhat local to me. Gear swaps only cost me my time and labor to help him set it up.

Crush washer.

My install cost $300. I supplied all parts except fluid. I had them installed by a very well known Shop/vendor on ChicagoSVT. Quiet as a mouse. Don't let anyone say a little noise is ok. That's BS.

Correct! If they makes ANY kind of noise the gears are not set correctly. The noise will only get louder.

I was told by Dean that he couldn't guarantee 100% quietness from my 4.30's because all Ford Racing 4.30's are made my motive. He said he will do everything he can to fine tune every last step. I know he takes a LOT of pride in his work, I trust he will do his best.

When I had mine installed, SmokdMercRauder did not use the supplied shims that came with the kit better yet he used the factory thick one piece shims as he said they are a lot better to use. Dialing everything in is what took him the longest but still so far so good.

Yes. I forgot about the Motive gears. I was assuming actual Ford non Motive made gears. :)

I would check with Mo's though, I'll bet Jeff could give you a good deal, and their workmanship is second to none.

I would like nothing better than MO's doing it...He's not close to me at all.I was trying to get them installed somewhere less than a 3hour drive...I spoke to Mo about this and no doubt he would do a great job...But,there's always a but,he's like 6 hours away...I may end up there anyway....
