View Full Version : Huge Scare Today

I thought I had a stripped spark plug today. Turns out in the end that the socket rubber sleeve had dried out and collapsed which caused the socket not to seat all the way down. What a huge relief when I figured it out. Thanks to yjmud for stopping by.
Also, one of the wells had about 2 or 3 teaspoons of oil in it. The socket was wet with it when I pulled it out but the plug electrode was nice and dry and light gray as normal. Where is the oil coming from?

Oil seals around the spark plug chambers.

I had an SHO taurtus that had oil in the Spark plug wells.
I was going to adress that in the next PM but that was a really big job for a novice.

It was only one. Would you care to elaborate on the subject a little?

So you just pull the valve cover and install a new gasket. Sounds easy enough except it's the passenger side and that is the side that is hard to get off due to clearance, if I am not mistaken.

Who the hell designed this service nightmare anyway?

Seriously though, lifting the engine takes less time than it does to jack up the car. At least for most. For me, that's about to change after tomorrow morning!

They sell a complete valve cover set with all wearable items. I would get OEM or Fel pro.

theres 8 little round seals under each hole for the spark plugs, they kinda grab on to the "humps" where the plug would go through

All the goodies for my cooling system revamp tomorrow.
Got it done today. Went pretty well except for a couple issues.
I got everything from Rock Auto, and they have the wrong spec on 2 hoses. Autozone's spec was wrong too though. What gives with that?
1. The lower radiator hose that goes to the t-stat housing was one size too small, and didn't come with a spring. So, I had to squeeze the spring to a smaller diameter, lube up the hose and sqeeeze it in. Then I had to force it on to the car with more lube. Pain in the ass, but it worked.
2. The hose that goes from the t-stat housing to the crossover was one size too large and was completely unusable. I had to go to 2 parts houses and get the closet thing we could find because it had to be done today. Turned out great though.
The heater hose fittings are one size on one end and another size on the other. I nuked the hoses for 20 seconds and shoved them on. All good.
I don't know why some people have such a hard time burping the system. I simply screwed a funnel on to the crossover, filled it up, filled the overflow tank and ran the car for 20 minutes. It bubbled down, I added more, capped it off and went for a ride. Pulled the crossover cap again just to be sure and it only took a tiny sip. Everything is perfect. Easiest part of the whole process. Except maybe for installing the water pump.:D

Thanks. Never saw the way this works before. I suppose since it was only one cylinder and was not that much oil, it will wait for the day when I decide to powdercoat the valve covers.

i would, there a pain in the ass to get off. also each bolt for the VC has a seal and of course the main seal that fits in the channel of the VC. btw, that channel is very fragile, so dont bang them around too much. ups decided to test the strength of it on a set i sold :mad2:
