View Full Version : My Marauder against the snow

for those of you who are new around here, I just want to tell you how great my Marauder went through the snow once again w/those Michelin Arctic Alpine snow tires on all four corners. This time around we had a good 8" of the white stuff that came down hard in a short amount of time, so when I was headed home from work at midnight, there were many roads that weren't yet plowed.
A co-worker of mine asked me to drive him home because his wrong wheel drive car has lousy tires on it and therefore isn't good in the snow at all. So on the way to his house I deliberately chose a hill that's pretty steap. On the way up that hill I had to drive around two vehicles that were stuck at the halfway point. One was some wrong wheel drive foreign car, and the other was a two wheel drive pick-up truck.
These snow tires are great, and I highly recommend them to anyone who will be driving their Marauder in the snow. The first snow fall caught me by surprise, and I had a very tough time getting through a mere two inches of snow w/the factory stock tires. I couldn't even start off from a standstill on a level road w/out fishtailing. The car was terrible in the snow. Until I put the Arctic Alpines on. What a major difference in snow traction.

Glad your impressed with the car "with the snow tires." See, those of us who went through this last winter knew what we were talking about! This car with the right tires is great. We had 6+ inches of the stuff plus frezing rain over the past few days here in Delaware. The MM never faltered once. I passed two CVPI's during the course of my daily commute and both looked at me with malace :) in there eyes. One guy was only running 25MPH, and kinda caught me by suprise when I came upon him. Last year during the 24" snow fall, I passed 2 CVPI's that had gone into tail spins and ended up in the median. Gotta love this car with the snow boots......:burnout:

My MM sits in this weather. My PT Cruiser with "wrong wheel drive" works very well in the white stuff. Tires do make a difference though.

Yep, I want to thank all of the guys on this board who recommended the Michelin Arctic Alpine snow tires to me, because they're definately the best snow tires that I've ever had. Furthermore, this is also the first car in which I've used snow tires on all four corners, and after driving my MM in three snow storms w/them, I've learned that having some good snows on the front also helps a lot w/stopping in the white stuff too.
I knew this car wasn't going to be too good in the snow w/out some good snow tires because I used to have a Grand Marquis, and that wasn't good in the snow either. But these tires have made a world of difference. In light of all this I think it's very obvious that it's imperative to have some good snow tires on a rear wheel drive car if that car will be driven in the snow, but a lot of people don't seem to realize that even front wheel drive cars need good snow tires also if they will be driven in the snow.
During the last three snow storms here in Connecticut, there have been a number of people that I had to drive around who were stuck w/their front wheel drive cars half way up hills. I'm sure that they were very surprised when they saw me in my car climbing right up a hill w/a rear wheel drive car that they couldn't negotiate w/their wrong wheel drive vehicles.
One of the guys that I know in work asked me yesterday if I had studded snow tires since he was one of those who I had passed the other day on the road in a snow storm. I was happy to be able to truthfully say to him "Nope, no studs on those tires, they're just really good snowtires".
I also explained to him that they're Michelin Arctic Alpines, but he seemed to be more interested in his wounded delicate ego because of the fact that his car wouldn't make it up a hill that my car conquered, despite the fact that he had wrong wheel drive and I didn't.

BillyG, Those Michelin Arctic Alpine snow tires sound awesome on the Marauder. Your experience in some pretty bad conditions will help us all!

That could change. The cold artic blasts are getting more severe and dipping down further south every year. Once you get 12" of snow, it might not hang around long, but it's coming! :)

Snow storm?! In CT?! LOL!
I have a feeling that you, guys, have no idea how a real snow storm looks like.
RWD is a bad choice for snow unless your last name ends on -kinen. Don't go so sceptical for FWD, with the same good snow tires and the same casual driver behind the wheel it will beat RWD, no doubt. So... what's the reason to be so proud? :D

I live in the "snow belt" of Northeastern Ohio. We've gotten everything over the past 3 weeks - including 21 degree temps with rain and a 1/2 layer of ice on the MM.
I have Nokian snow & ice shoes, but I have not had any problems getting around. Were we live is very rural and plowing is optional!!! There are 2 huge hills on the way to the kids daycare that I have passed 3 FWD cars spinnin' and 2 SUVS in the ditch. Now I'm sure the SUVS superman capes must have failled again. (My hasband has the superman syndrome in the Explorer - drives me nuts!!!)
Anyway, I am very impressed with this car in any weather - so far! I can say though that hopefully next winter I will be selling the winter tires/wheels and she'll get to stay in a warm, dry barn till spring. (Like the Mach1 does)

What's the difference between 8" of snow, or 28" of snow if you have RWD, w/out snow tires, you're aren't even going to get around okay if you have 2" of snow. That was my point. If you have good snow tires, like the Arctic Alpines, then your RWD Marauder is good for getting around in atleast one foot of snow. And even if you get more you'll still be okay as long as the plows come around atleast once in a 24 hour period.
My point also had to do w/the fact that like yourself, many people think that you can't get around w/RWD, but that's only true if you don't have good snow tires on. If you live in an area that's only good for sitting around and watching the cars rust, and where there are more animals than people, then you obviously aren't going to have the luxury of public snow plows, and therefore you'll need something more than RWD. But over here in civilization, RWD works great for me w/good snows on. Why should I buy a whole separate vehicle just for driving in the snow when I can get through it w/out any problems by just buying four good snow tires for my Marauder???? Get it?? So I think you've misunderstood my previous posts if you're asking me what's the reason "to be so proud" because it's not about "being proud" but I was just passing along some onfo about how good the Michelin Arctic Alpine snow tires are, so that others might be helped.
