After doing my Taurus wheels I knew I had to do the MM wheels next.
After giving them a very good cleaning with a strong wheel/tire cleaner I cleaned the wheels with rubbing alcohol and allowed them to dry.
https://scontent-a-atl.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/t31.0-8/335107_2344093660315_100562313 0_o.jpg
Then proceeded to tape off the inside of the wheels because I really didn't feel like coating it and didn't want any over spray on them either.
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/409088_2344098740442_178921202 9_1472195_872570954_n.jpg
I did end up taping off the tires themselves to avoid the hassle of trying to rub the Plasti Dip off the tire surface but didn't bother taking a picture of it.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/t31.0-8/321935_2344102700541_104388027 4_o.jpg
First coat went down with 50% transparency, allowed 30 mins to set up and then I laid down 4 more medium-heavy coats with 30 mins in between each coat.
And the finished product.

Total cost: $6.88 per can of Plasti Dip (I used 2 cans) and $10 in blue painters tape = $25 (with tax lol) and about 8-9 hrs of work including prep time. Best part is I can remove the Plasti Dip whenever I want without any damage to the wheel surface and if it gets messed up, I can peel it all off and shoot the wheel again.
No pictures of them on the car yet cause I still have my winter tires on but whenever the chance of any snow failing I will be putting them on and taking pictures.
God damn birdman!!!

Yeah and to do black chrome wheel is done by powder coating cost $$$$ and not reversible. I can switch back to polished aluminum stock look at anytime.
I did my Taurus wheels because they are high polished chrome and wanted to keep the salt off the wheels, once spring comes I'll take the stuff off.

Never said you were. It's also not flat black (no luster), it's matte (small luster), they look a lot better in person.

Let's call them Gumby Wheels...Damn it! I think that's a great idea. Just think of all the wear and tear they'll endure still maintaining the luster underneath. I may try this on my 2011 Mustang wheels I have for the vic. Thanks for sharing.

looks good, i'll have to do mine in yellow to match my paint job after it gets out of the body shop....my wife made me paint the mm in taxi cab yellow so people can see my vehicle and stop running into me...;). i seen youtube videos of the plastidipped rims, pretty versitile with the possiblities. i think black with another color to highlight different parts of the wheel would look unique, like black spokes, but red outer rim. probably a pain in the ass to tape off the round/circular outer edge though. great job

For anyone wondering about how Plastidip holds up, I sprayed the center section of my grille and the grille slats on my girlfriend's Jetta, both of which have not chipped in any way. The plastidip is holding up better than my grille surround that I had professionally painted.

Thanks guys.
I have seen people do everything front just the front bumper to keep it clean during winter months to roofs to whole cars. It actually holds up pretty well but that really depends on how many coats your lay down. If you go with the Matte look you can also spray clearcoat on top of the plasti dip to add some shine and another layer while still being able to remove it just like normal.
The only bad thing I have heard about it is after being left on for so long it can be a PITA to remove but that's people who have left it on for over a year in the southern states and out west where it can get pretty hot.
You have White, Black, Gunmetal, Red, Blue and Purple to choose from so options of applications are somewhat endless.

The reason why the caps are dipped as well is because if I went to put the cap on it would tear the plasti dip where the cap goes. I sprayed the wheels with the caps on. I could take a razor and take the stuff off the cap. I'm sticking with the stock chrome lugs to add just a little contrast.

There really isn't any skill to do this. Take the wheels off, clean them really well, mask off then area you don't want to spray, lay down a 50% coat for the first time, wait 30 mins and lay down a little heavier coat, wait another 30 mins and repeat several times. Spray the hard spots first and keep the can about 6" away from the wheel and you're good to go.

ctrlraven
02-21-2012, 11:19 AM
Tire shine seems to be okay, now tire/wheel cleaner could start to eat away at the plasti dip from what I have read online. When I cleaned my Taurus wheels I used regular car wash shampoo and low pressure water and they cleaned up just fine.

2 different colors can be done guys, also designs can be done.....the issue with designs and such are, when the plastidip dries, and you pull up the tape, the plastidip will pull up with the tape. solution: instead of waiting for it to dry, you peel the tape off while its still wet......this means you need to work fast with thick coat/s. you can watch a bunch of videos on dipyourcar.com on how-to's, also, i found glow in the dark plastidip, and some flourecent colors with a google search....iv'e been thinking of painting the back bumper's MARAUDER with a coat of glow in the dark spray paint.....not plastidip, it would look almost white in the day time, but would glow green at night, any thoughts?

There's a video I saw on YouTube Where it shows you how to dip Your wheels without removing them from the car..
Yeah i was thinking you would have to work fast in order to do two colors, but honestly, i think i might stick to the black and save myself some headache! :D
Looks good and I am glad to see someone attempt this project on the ground! I don't have a lift either so I was thinking "how the hell am i going to do this?" Jack up one side of the car at a time i suppose. But anyways your wheels look great! I like the black on black but I want to paint my calipers to make it stand out.

Man Your ride looks sharp! I'm so thinking of dipping my wheels lol but on a DTR...hhhmmmmm:/ and wait you could get a ticket for "glow in the dark" rims?:O Really? I didnt know that but howcome? Threat to society??
that video is of the led wheel lights.......glow in dark anything doesn't 'throw' light like that, led wheel lights = a ticket, glow in the dark rims = im not sure....but it sounds risky.
thanks everyone for the compliments, i also dipped the window trim, but after looking at it for about 5 minutes, i peeled it off.....just made the car too plain IMO. also, painting the rims on the car would be my last resort....it will take more time to tape off the brakes and fenders than it took me to jack up the car and remove the wheel, however if you dont have a jack, than i guess your SOL.--whitey

I was lucky enough to have my wheels already off my car since I had my snow tires on. The wheel can be handled after about an hour or so after the last coat goes on. If you start early enough on a weekend day you can have all four wheels done in a day especially if you just use index cards and your wheels are relatively clean normally so you'll spend less time on the wheel cleaner and alcohol clean prep.

index cards didn't work for me, it was too windy. i ended up just peeling the excess off my tire.....theres still some on there...but it isn't really noticable so i dont care.

If you don't use index then you can silicone the tire (silicone tire shine spray, not the foam) and the overspray will rub right off, I did that with my front tires since I didn't bother cleaning the tire and the painters tape would not stick to it.

Thanks for the inspiration... I did my wheels and chrome window trim, this stuff is amazing!
Make sure you apply several coats, almost a full can per wheel...

No it can not be used on the calipers. Have to use high temp paint or dedicated brake paint. I picked up some VHT brake part primer and silver paint. I will probably do them next month when I have off the week of memorial day.

Ok I just picked up caliper paint. What about the inside of the wheel? Plasti or not to plasti?

Wow this stuff looks cool.
How difficult was the window trim? any tips?
I'd dip the whole rim, but it would take me a month of hard labor to clean all the buildup off in there, its nasty.

I forgot about this thread. I created a before/after thread on my old Marauder. I really liked the combination and kept the plasti-dip on my wheels for a while:

I did plasti-dip on my current Marauder and used the Glossifier but I don't like how it turned out. I was rushed and there was wind. I know, I know, i should have done it in my garage, but i was pressed for time and space. I still like the Plasti-dip look and would like to redo my wheels at some point.
I will have the plasti-dip on my wheels when we go to Louisville.

Looks good! Plasti dip is great because not sure if you like black wheels after a while? Great, peel it back and go back to chrome. Although I do like black wheels on my Marauder and I'm looking for an aftermarket version that's better than plasti dip

You don't always have to go black. They make a bunch of different colors.

What slotted rotors do you have? The up close pic looks like the rotor slot is on the wrong side. Should swipe into the brake pad from the hub outward as it pass past the pad.
I liked the black wheel look so much on mine I ended up just buying a set of black Mustang wheels to use as winter wheels.

True but any color besides black or gun metal gray looks truly horrible on our cars. I wouldn't recommend it
Unless used sparingly as an accent

I've got the R1 concepts rotors, the slots are angled clockwise towards the front of the car if that makes sense........If the slot is directly on top it goes to the front
I'm seriously thinking about getting the stock wheels powdercoated black so it looks like your winter wheels

Looks good, IMHO, they look sweet for about a month, then i want my original polished back. I only do mine to try and protect them from the winter salt.

I did this on my old Explorer a couple years ago. I had some issues getting the plasti-dip off mainly because I used very light coats on the wheels. The thicker you get this stuff the easier it is to remove. I found that several people who made the same light coat mistake as me used WD40 to help get the coating off. Sure enough, I sprayed the rims down with WD40 and the coating started to melt off. I just washed with a degreaser when I was done and they looked factory stock again.

With the Plasti-dip you can't be afraid to lay down some thick coats, it's not going to hurt anything, will increase the durability of it and makes it easier to come off.
I think I did the first two coats at 50% and then the next three at 80%. Helps to hit all the hard angle spots during the first two coats.
