Greetings all. I'm wanting to move my rear shocks inboard to make room for some 335 hides. Does anyone out here have any suggestions, tips, tricks, or help for me in this venture? I know I'm going to have to weld in some new shock tabs on the axle itself, but what about the upper mounts to the frame? Thanks everyone! Your help is greatly appreciated! - j

PM TooManyFords, he's done some rear end mods on his blue car that may get you pointed in the right direction.

I looked into doing the same awile back and was advised the upper and lower control arms are still an issue from trusted sources here.

I guess a better question would be, what size hide can I use (1/4 heads up) if I move my rear shocks inboard?

You're absolutely right about the control arms. They would rub with 335s.

Thanks everyone for your insight and help!!! - j

I looked into moving the shocks, but the control arms are the problem, plus moving shocks in is not going to help your ride at all.

With big tires i run its almost tung kissing the lower control arm, not the shock.

My 305 tires rub slightly on the lower CA when running 20psi. The shocks aren't the only problem.
Marty do you have a 9"?

Here is what we did with my car: The factory shock has a bracket on the back of the axle housing. We took the shock loose and put the shock on the inside of that factory bracket. We then used steel to fab up a bracket on the "new" inside side of the shock.

It did not buy tons of space but it was enough. I don't recall how big a tire we got on it, but if I recall correctly we went with a 305. I think to get to a 335, you would have to do a lot of fabbing and relocating. When we did my car, we did not feel that this was necessary.

Now, in race trim, we run a 28x10.5 tire with a 9.5"Bogart bead lock rim on the back.

One thing that I forgot to mention was that we did shorten the axle housings by an inch on each side but continued to use the factory housing.

Don't know if all this helps or not, but it is always fun to think back about how we got here:

As far as the 9", any custom axle shop can make it to any custom width you would like, or, contact Moser or Currie, I'm getting the 35 spline axles, locker, and gears from Moser. They will build you a custom 9" axle to all your specs. As far as the 4 link, you can weld on or bolt on the tabs and cross members necessary to accommodate the 4 link. But you will have to fab up everything. There is NOT a bolt on setup for our beasts. I think I'm going to fabricate a cross member to move my shocks further inboard as well as the control arms. With the 4 link setup, you can get rid of the control arms or move them inboard as well. Depends on what you're trying to accomplish, drag or road course.

Hope this helps out a little. - j
