View Full Version : New-to-me sound from under the hood after WOT

So I peeled out from a stop sign, last WOT before arriving at work. Broke loose and let off right at the 1-2 shift, should have feathered back instead of closing the throttle hard, maybe.
But there was a "weeeeeeee" dropping in tone, like a turbo winding down, eminating from the front of the engine I think.
Maybe the belt was slipping over a stiff idler?
A quick inspection revealed no stuck idlers, belt looked good. Maybe it was the sound of the alternator in "off" mode at WOT?
NA 300A with a Lidio tune.
I'm not used to this kind of foot-to-floor power yet.

Sounds like its the clutch in your alt. When going WOT it does that to put in a couple of extra HP....its normal. You will notice your lights dim as well if you have them on, and your volt guage drop.

+1, that's what I'm thinking, too.

Throwing out something off-the-wall here:
Could it be something in the HVAC system? I remember sometimes if I got on the throttle a little and then released rather abruptly I could hear a sort of "whish" sound from around my center air vents, like a VERY quiet blow-off valve.
Like I said, it's a FAR stretch, but just a thought, and I could swear this type of thing was mentioned before.

I know these have a reputation for taking abuse and loving it, but...don't want to break my baby!
Thanks for the insight.

On second thought, I think it's terminal. You need to unload the car before encountering catastrophic failure. Better sell it to me for, like, $8.00...

Yep what they said. Just a friendly tip. When you go WOT disengage your over drive if you have it. When you shift into.OD back off let it shift then hammer down. Your trans will thank you

Yep, I read that when researching these cars, and practiced it over the last 8 years in my previous car. Made sense then, makes sense now.

No OD on interstate with a 4.10 can get a touch pricey on gas not to mention 4000+ rpm cruising. Around town however OD off T/C off go time ON

When you go WOT disengage your over drive if you have it. All vehicles with the 4R70W transmission have OD.

I may hit a highway twice a month... ;) Then, yes, I will put the OD on.

Alternator clutch and its normal. There is a ton of Marauder burnout videos on youtube that you can hear the same sound after they let off the gas.
