I found a set of 8 COP's for my '99 Lincoln Town Car on the net for only $68. Does anyone have any experience with them?

For that price they're most likely junk Chinese knock-offs or rejects. Pass.

I'm sure they are Chinese, but rejects.....not so sure.

I'll bet Motorcraft are Chinese too.

Maybe I should have said "seconds"...coils that were just out of spec enough not to be sold by a reputable company.

I installed the coils today and the Town Car purrs like a kitten. Even if they only last a few years, $68 for a set of 8 is hard to beat.

I saw the same exact set online for $120, $154 and $89 on Amazon - a REPUTABLE dealer. It's seems to be all a case of clever marketing.

The aftermarket coils for SOHC engines are easy to come by, and are beneficial. I put a set in my CVPI and I can now and have been for over a year, able to burn regular gas. Now coils for the DOHC engines are a different animal.

The Marauder ones are $85 for a set.

Now that sounds like a China Price, and for that I'd pay the higher price. But that's just me.

You're a brave man. ;) MSD coils for my Marauder and my Town Car, because I hate surprises more than high parts prices.

If one goes, it's not like it's going to ruin anything.

I still have the originals (133k) on the Marauder.

You must be wealthy. For the price of MSD's, I could install a set of these inexpensive ones, and put 40 more new ones, still in the boxes, in the trunk as backups.;)

I'm telling you, the Town Car runs perfect with these. I'm quite pleased.

I wish I was wealthy, hehe, but the MSD coils are not THAT expensive. :) But yeah, they are pricey, but I've always had such good luck with MSD ignition products. Plus, when I talk to people who really know engines, including the folks at Shelby American who tuned my Marauder, I always get the same advice on ignition components: MSD.

Cool on finding a good set for an inexpensive price, though. I'd be interested to hear how they're working in four or five years, but we'll both have long forgotten this discussion by then. :)

I looked up MSD's for a Town Car, and the price I found was $54 each. My price was $8.50 each. So I could buy 6 for the price of 1 MSD or 50 cop's. 8 installed and 42 in the trunk for spares.:D ($54 x 8 = $432/8.5 = 50.82 cops)

Not trying to argue it, just interesting. Seriously, you gotta wonder if all the cops are the same, and the various manufacturers just slap their name on them and mark them up 600%+++?

I know a few people with the cheap versions and they are nightmares. As for $385 for the Motocraft set??? I have them for $259.99 so there isn't much of a deal on that website.

tbone

Yes, that Motorcraft deal is bad.

Nightmare? Would you care to elaborate?

I think I paid about $43 per coil for my '07 Town Car's set (part number 82428 for a set of eight). I don't recall what I paid for my Marauder's set, but yeah, they're pricey, no argument there.

There were some discussions over on crownvic.net about cheaper coils from companies such as Accel, and some people reported problems eventually creeping up. Like one coil out of eight going bad after some time in service, that kind of thing. There were also people saying they've been running them for years with no problems.

Ok, I admit it, I like the MSD coils because they're red. :D

I'll admit too that if money was flowing in my wallet a little more, I would rather get ones that say Motorcraft on them.

Just stay away from the Crapatelli coils. POS!! :mad2:

Money down the drain.

Like the ole saying goes you get what you pay for.

But with Crapatelli you pay big bucks and still get crap/scr :censor: d.

There was a post somewhere that showed the pink labeled topped Motorcrafts are Chinese knockoffs. These are the ones that Musclemercs friend sent me a couple years ago suppossedly from a crate engine. So far not a lick of issues from them, but very curious now on the white VS. Pink top Motorcrafts. I have about three full sets now, originals with a couple bad ones, white topped off a 5000 mile cobra that are good, and this pink set off a crate motor that work fine as well. Anyone have an answer to the colors?

I've yet to see anyone give a specific example as to what is so bad about these cops. Just generalities.

Interesting read as I think I need to replace mine. I've got a light throttle sputter that is driving me insane. Although I can't drive the car right now, stupid broken leg/ankle.

I have about three full sets now, originals with a couple bad ones,

How did you determine which ones are bad? Were they melted or burnt, or is there some way to test them?

tbone

So I bought a set for $85 delivered to my door. The car runs great. The old ones were just that. OLD.

I swear, the car seems to be a little smoother and the throttle response a little quicker. I will keep the old 133K cops just in case, but I doubt I will need them.

My suspicion is that some company in China or wherever churns out MILLIONS of these things and sells them around the world. Companies then slap their logo on them, and sell them for differing amounts based on their name brand....... Wells, Motorcraft, etc. Just another example of clever marketing. (Look at your cops. The ID is just a sticker on top. Nothing is stamped into the plastic.)

For all you naysayers: Ever heard of generic brands? They perform just as well. And taste the same too. Just trying to help anyone on a budget, like me.

If you insist on Motorcraft, Mo's sells them for around $270 a set. They are a sponsor of this site.

Don't need to use them yet. Car only has 67K miles on it. But other than not having a sticker on top they look identical to the stock brand. They look like a good quality product. They shipped quickly (same day) and they were packaged in individual boxes.
No complaints so far, I think I got a fair deal.
