Hi -
Since reading the threads that suggest I/we should be running 5w-30, I've been looking for the 5 quart bottle with this viscosity.
I can get the 5w-20 all day long - Anyone getting the 5w-30? Where are you finding it?
It's a savings of $6-7 over individual quarts.
Thanks,
Mark

Yeah, What he ^^^^ said!!
Unless you already have low oil pressure that you 100% know is from increased bearing clearance and not a bad oil pump you should not be usimg 5w-30 unless you run the car in 110+ degree air temps all of the time.

Motorcraft 5w-20 synthetic blend here also.
I can only find the 5-20 around here too and on it I'm not seeing that big of a savings vs the individual qts.
I run 5-30 that's what the engines were designed for and then they switched to recommending 5-20 for CAFE purposes, even started saying that is what you should use in many of the cars that the owners manuals call out for 5-30 and don't even mention the existence of 5-20.

I use Mobile 1 Full Synthetic 5W/30 Oil year around . But keep in mind I live in South Florida where it is Hotter & I have a Built Motor. Most people here on the board would tell you to stick too 5W/20 . Their is very little difference between 5w/20 & 5w/30 . I even know one or two people down here that use 10w/30 and have no issues, but I wouldn't.

"CAFE purposes" What's that  Anyway I use what it calls for. I did switch to mobile 1 synthetic, I think it last a little longer IMOA.

I had to google it also:
CAFE=Cars Average Fuel Economy.
Like some members here say google search function is friend!

CAFE purposes means better mpg due to less HP required to pump 5-20 vs 5-30. No it's not a big difference but every bit helps. Ford also at the same quite stating that their designed minimum required engine life expectancy was 10yr/150K.
I use Mobil-1 0w-40, it meets the more stringent requirements of the European mfgrs, screw CAFE...

I've been able to get the 5W-30 jugs at Walmart. I think Advance Auto is running a special right now on a 5 quart jug with filter as well.
As far as 5W-30 vs. 5W-20:
I spent about 10 years doing engine development with Ford Motor Company, including being the systems engineer on the 2003 Aviator and 2005 Mustang V8s?
5W-30 is probably a good oil for the street with mixed temperatures, yes.
I think you'll understand that I can go into details here. And understand that I'm not saying that 5W-20 is not going to instantly do damage. But suffice it to say I've seen and been involved in a LOT of development on these motors, and my personal opinion is that I would never run 5W-20 in a modular motor. Regarding your "spec oil" comment, you need to look at what else governs this recommendation.
I would not run 5W-20 in ANY stock mod motor. This is especially true in 4v motors, but applies to all of them in one form or another. I've seen the dyno testing. I've probably looked at several hundred engines disassembled and spread out on inspection tables. And I've been involved in testing to resolve issues where varying the oil viscosity was part of the test DOE. Trading a very small FE improvement in exchange for a large durability safety margin is not something I'm interested in doing.

The above quote is exactly why I thought that 5w30 was the accepted oil for MMs (despite what the manual says).
I've been checking Wal-Mart and Advance Auto and can't find it anywhere.
If anyone can point me to a link, I would appreciate it.
I'm desperate - I'm 300mi over my 5K oil change interval - Help! ;)
Thanks,
Mark

The part number for the jugs is XO-5W30-5QSP if you want to look for it online.

I've been checking Wal-Mart and Advance Auto and can't find it anywhere. That's because no one carries the 5W-30 flavour in 5-qts jugs except the dealer.
I'm desperate - I'm 300mi over my 5K oil change interval - Help! ;)Wally World and Advance DO carry it in single quarts, though...

Does it have to be the Motorcraft oil?

I was running Mobil 1 5W-20 for a long time and at my last oil change I switched to Mobil 1 5W-30. Next change I'll be going to the high mileage 5W-30 from Mobil 1. I couldn't find it last time before I had to do the oil change. From the time before to most recent I see WalMart increased their prices by $3-4 on the 5 qt jugs of Mobil 1.
Look at it this way...
How much time and gas are you wasting, driving around looking to save a few dollars?
It may be cheaper to just pick up that oil at the nearest store, or plan ahead and buy it while you're out and see a good price. Never heard of Oil spoiling...

With the advances being made in technology (oil) and the new engines a 5yr old article does not really apply. Amsoil, Mobil-1, RP ant the list goes on, makes quality oil for consumers. Pick anyone and be happy, or if price matters look into WalMart, Costcos and the likes. Even Scheafferoil is coming out with a 5W-20 soon, Torco Oil has just release a 0W-20 oil. Like was said save time now and change the oil and plan ahead.

It was all Internet research.
I just bit the bullet and bought the 5w20 in the 5qt jug at Wally World.
I'll keep my eye out for the 5w30 (will be good to have for the "Summer" oil change).
Thanks all!
