I have a 03 Mercury Marauder with a few hundred miles shy of 85,000. I am experiencing a clicking noise coming from the rear right of the car whenever I accelerate. The right wheel well, right inner rim, and right rear shock was covered in some type of oil. I pressure washed the oil off lastnight. I checked today and there is a little fresh oil inside the rim. Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks in advance!

Was the axle tsb ever done on the rear axles?
Soft axle issue most likely and wheel bearings going out.

Axle seals, and since you have an 03 I am also gonna say axles are shot. I had the same thing, the clicking and then noticed oil, my axle on passenger side was roasted, as were bearings and seals, ended up doing all seals, both axles, and both bearings. Get it checked out sooner rather than later.

Bad axles/bearings don't generally make clicking noises...usually it's more of a rumbling or roaring noise. Clicking could be an issue with the e-brake. Does sound like you have a bad seal, though.

I acquired it with 23,000 miles and I have not had anything replaced suspension wise since I have had it.

Yeah I would say you need atleast 1 axle, and I would advise both. I strangly didn't have the typical roaring, but I did have the clicking. Apparently the clicking in mine was because the wear was so much that the axle was more or less banging around in the housing.

I must agree have the rear axles checked. I have a 2003 and it made some noise and had oil inside the wheel and brake assembly. Thought it was the brake caliper so replaced it. Still had oil appear. My son was driving it and turned a corner and was accelerating and it quit accelerating even though the engine still was. Thought the tranny was gone and had it towed on a flatbed. When they unloaded it the right rear wheel fell off. The axle broke off at the wheel. They wanted almost 1500.00 to replace just the one axle. I did some research and found the fleet safety recall and found a complete rebuild kit for about $500.00. It has both axles, all the bearings and seals and rear lube. Good luck!
I say get it checked soon before this happens. I went in for gear swap and ended up adding an extra $400 to the bill.:mad2:
Take a good look at the pic.

I would like to vote for a rear shock being blown. Of course, with these cars, axles, bearings and seals are always a good idea.
