View Full Version : Why so many get totaled?

Bradley G
03-06-2012, 05:52 PM
Maybe it because we love this car so much we pay attention to how many get an early demise.
I've had some very close calls with the MM and it is usually due to traction, or lack there of.
I'm going to say the lion share of accidents that end a Marauders useful life early are due to lack of grip.
Lots o power + lots o weight, maybe some wet pavement and or low tire tread.
Or how about mismatched tires?

Maybe in a S/C Marauder grip would be a problem, but if you can't handle the power and grip bias of an N/A Marauder, on dry roads at least, I don't think you belong behind the wheel of an even remotely powerful car...

Liberty mutual 's rates are based on prior records on Marauders vs Vics and GrM's [ DITTO /// THEFT and RECOVEREY ] plus the fact if the insurance company even smells a bent unibody or frame, however minor 1/16 " it is a automatic total loss that they will resale at an auction.Unless u buy it back with a new salvage title

Well it's not a bad handling car but IMO stock brakes suck when cold. Tires go bad much faster then most cars and they go bad where you can't hardly see it. Most people don't check the front inners and rear centers. Reasons like these are understandable. For Most people are not GOOD drivers. Something really crazy has to happened for me to get onto a wreck and even at that I will make it to where it's less extreme. Most people will not think about all this but you are in control of a weapon and somewhere a mother and father is bringing home there first born and at the same time a man is stopping for more beer to drink in his pickup truck cause he can't wait to get to the bar. Ahhh ok I'm done

I have had my car three weeks and have had three near accidents. I think it is because I drive faster and the car is black.

As these cars drop in value the total out window becomes much bigger. When the damages are higher than 70% of the car it could be totaled depending on your insurance company.

Just went through this in December, our 01 Cobra was totaled out. :(

Check the threads and posts here and I think you'll find that most if not ALL of the Marauder wrecks and losses come back to youth and inexperience.

I agree with BradleyG that loss of grip is a prime contributor to problems. Poor tread or poor traction due to road conditions has lead to MOST of the spinout wrecks posted here over the years.

Our DTR was totalled out while my wife was driving to work, a 20-something was heading home from an all night party, passed out, swerved into my wife, even after she took evasive action.

There's a reason why insurance premiums for young people and poor drivers are very high compared to the rest of the population. Their driving record is reflected in how much they pay.

In most cases we value this car as a collectable, since this is so, why are so many
people driving them as daily drivers. Look at the milage on most of the car for sales
close to or over 100K

Both Joe and Darren keep there cars for shows and such, I'm sure there are many others who should be included in this roster of non daily drivers.

If you have to use the car as a daily, be aware of how many newer car are in the
bone yard.

There are some damn fool drivers out there, why risk your prized ride for a daily
comute.

I have a 68 AMX I have owned for 34 Years, never once any fender benders
same is true with my 96 Impala SS, 70 Ols 442, for that matter my 08 STSV
That car has less than 8500 miles on it. I like it very mucy. Do I drive it everyday
NO I drive a turbo VW bug as a daily driver is an 03 has 59000 miles on it and
runs like a top.

So If you want to see the Marauder become extent than by all means drive it daily.
Some one will evenully run in to you.

If you want the Marauder to become collectable then DO NOT use it as a daily.

That is the answer. Buy a beater or two and drive them. Not your Marauder.

JMHO I am not wrong on this issue. Why do collectable insurance company
limit your milage on a yearly basics, HELLO.

It never failed someone was putting role cages etc etc and to be blunt really chopping the GN's up to make them faster. Every time I heard these things in the back of my Head I said GREAT. Less unmolested GN's out there just increase's the value of my car and I still used it! Now almost 48,000 miles (:-()and strait as an arrow. The add on's I've done can be changed in one day to 100% stock for a true purist! Just another way to look at it!!!!

There's no such thing as an "accident", they are all preventable.

If you want your car to stay "nice", don't drive it. You can always repaint and fix the interior, but you can't remove the miles.

The sky could fall if I pull mine out and crush it, if that happens, well, that's why I have an agreed value insurance policy, which also limits the miles I can put on the car.

I bought mine to embarrass all the so called supercars, that is it's sole purpose in life, it does a good job of it, I have 3 DD's, so it's not an issue for me, but I get where your coming from.

MrBluGruv
03-08-2012, 01:29 PM
What it REALLY comes down to is a matter of money, if you think of it that way.

How deep down into the construction of the car can you go before replacing a part or section makes it not the original car? Could you replace EVERYTHING around the frame with NOS or OEM replacement parts and have a "new" Marauder? What all even must be replaced or retouched in order to look and drive like new, and what is inconsequential?

Like I said, to an LARGE extent, the biggest limiting factor to the quality of your Marauder now will be how much money you have, and of that how much you are willing to put into it.

marauder21
03-08-2012, 02:49 PM
Well I put mods on mine..but the mods so far are ones you could easily remove to make it stock again. But is it true if you supercharge your marauder it increases the value of it??

That is not what I said. The question generally was.

" Why so many get totaled?"

The more miles you use your Marauder, the more chances you take.
Simple answer to a simple question

I would think you are right, I could get hit anytime, anywhere. I could get killed going through a door. But I go anyway. I am not foolish enough to not wear a vest and maybe some body armor. I am looking out for trouble at all times. Hell I could hit by a bus if I wasn't paying attention to my surrounding. Even before I went to Paris Island I was street wise, but there they tauch me to be even more aware of my surrounding. It served me well in Viet Nam, and it has served me well on the street. As a LEO
I am in harms way much more than most and so far I am still upright.

Darren said it right, "There's no such thing as an "accident", they are all preventable."
I think you have some anger issues you need to deal with. Your comment, although correct in many ways, showed how upset you are.

When I was a kid (16-25) my folks and I worked SCCA races. I sat through a lot of driver schools. Once I realized that my heroes (Donohue, Rodriguez,Bonnier, Revson, Siffert, McLaren, Fangio, Levegh and countless others) died racing at the top of their game. I realized that my ability as a driver was way sub par. I only saw 2 die, David Pearl t-boned in a formula car at Daytona turn 4 and a Colombian driver at Sebring who failed to tighten his belts and when his Porsche went sideways and rolled on straight 8 his head was crushed between the door frame and the pavement. Gruesome. Almost everyone overestimates their driving skills. I have a photo of Marauder Boi's car pinned above my PC to remind me that (my) lack of experience and judgement can be fatal. With age comes wisdom, the wisdom that speed kills. End of lecture. Speed belongs on the track, not the street.
Please ignore this post if it doesn't apply to you, you're a better driver than I'll ever be and my dead heroes.

I was not trying to be "pretentious", I was only conveying a lesson that I had learned earlier in life. By all means, drive how you see fit. Still, many complain of the car's characteristics and not their ability to harness the abilities of this particular car. Yes, I have made multiple mistakes as a driver, not the least of which was shearing off a power line pole. Over the years I have learned my limits in driving and many other pursuits. The initial question was why so many get totaled? The Marauder is not like any other car, that's why I bought it. The learning curve was steep from a GM. I made mistakes, the idea is to work your way up to the limits of your car and your own. Luckily the only accident I've had (in the Marauder) so far is when an 8 year old kid on a bike ran into me, if I hadn't cranked hard to the left and flat spotted the tires, well I shudder to think of what would have happened, Tomorrow may be the day I buy the farm. If you think that I was trying to guilt you, you are wrong. I was only giving my opinion, which everyone has one (especially on this site, thank you moderators). And yes, it is a daily driver, mostly city traffic. Though I did top over 100mph the other day on the way to Cedar Key so I am certainly no angel. Yet. Peace out.

As much as I'm not a fan of Marauder clones, I think you could probably emulate the driving feel of a Marauder if you dropped in a 4V 4.6 and did suspension work on any crown vic/grand marquis. It won't BE a Marauder, it probably won't have the wow factor that one would have on bystanders when you just drive by, but I bet it'd feel awful damn close in the driver seat driver.

The nicest thing about the Marauder though is that it's all done up in a nice, neat little street-legal package already. It's hard to beat that if you have stringent inspections where you live. :P

I know some bad cops and some really good ones. The worst is my brother (forcibly retired) Like you he served 2 tours in country during Tet, came back a changed man. Left the DC Metro Police under less than honorable circumstances after 23 years, 4 wives and a 1.75 liter bottle of booze a day. The best is my neighbor, a K-9 officer. Watching him drive has taught me a lot about my driving and helped me clean up my act. He is polite to no end, you wouldn't know he's a LEO if he's not in uniform. People differ greatly, that's why we as a group rarely seem to have the same outlook on anything.
Thank you for your unique point of view, I may not always agree with it, but I do respect it, as I do most of the posts on this site. I expect people to disagree with me, after all I come from a different background. It's only my opinion, not an edict. Stay safe, we just lost a sheriff of 30 years during a traffic stop.

It provides me with quite time and with enjoyment. Sure I like to drive
them. But if they are all here after I have left this earth, it doesn't matter
I'm dead (No Worries). My children or grandchildren will enjoy them then.
You see the one good thing about America is we can choose what, where
and how we want to lead our lives. As law abiding citizens.

If you ever get the opportunity to serve your country in the Military, I
think you may have a change of heart in discipline, attitude, respect,
and manner of presentation to others.

Please have a safe and peaceful day.

The words of a true gentleman. Nicely put Russell. I couldn't of said any better myself. Truth is, you'll never know until you're in the situation yourself.;)

We can talk about the military and police officers offline. We were talking about totalled Marauders.

Only reason it seems like a lot of our cars get totalled is because we care... Probably doesnt seem like a lot to anyone else. If this were a Camaro, Mustang, G8; etc message board im sure we could pull up countless wrecks of our type cars. Thats the only logical reason i see... We have interest in these cars. Im sure millions of camry's get totalled a year... i really dont give a damn tho lol.

There's no such thing as an "accident", they are all preventable.

Not true. Much closer to the truth than people admit, but not totally true.

My most serious 3 accidents were unavoidable. Had both my Grand Marquis and my Marauder rear ended. In the Marauder guy nailed me at stop sign. In the GM, woman nailed me on line for an exit ramp on a parkway. Also had a kid in his dad's grand national pull onto my side of the road oncoming to my 67 Biscayne. In all three cases I accomplished the safest smartest manuver I could. I took the rear end crashes with the foot jammed on the brake and I maneuvered the Biscayne to hit a wall rather than an oncoming car.

In all three cases I saw them coming before they saw me. Wasn't doing anything special, illegal or unsafe. Didn't matter.

On the other hand there have been thousands of times that I saw it coming and could do something.

So usually you are right, just not always. It's just a matter or time or mileage.

BTW on a motor cycle 2 of the three were avoidable (the rear ends) simply rev into a nook. The oncoming traffic one would have been a near miss or death though. Depends on my reflexes/skill.

So maybe all accidents are avoidable on a motorcycle?

Same goes for an old chevy vega, drop a camaro engine in it and away you go, it won't BE a Camaro, but close enough!

:D

Yep, cause the Vega was totally built on GM's F-Body platform... :shake:

I'm not saying to drop a 4V into a Mercury Milan here, we're talking about the same chassis (and the same body even) holding the more powerful engine.

Now, if you had said something like "let's drop a 427 into this '69 Camaro that originally had a 350" or "let's put this 4.6 into this mustang that originally had a 3.8", that'd probably make more sense. But it'd also probably prove my point further, sooooooo....

As I said, they were all preventable, had the other driver been focused on what the task at hand was(driving), the crash would not have happened.

Sometimes others, other than yourself will have to prevent the crash.

[QUOTE=Mac-MerC;1157338][QUOTE=Mercguy04;1157194] There are some damn fool drivers out there, why risk your prized ride for a daily
comute.

So If you want to see the Marauder become extent than by all means drive it daily.
Some one will evenully run in to you.

If you want the Marauder to become collectable then DO NOT use it as a daily.

That is the answer. Buy a beater or two and drive them. Not your Marauder.

Oh OK. I'm dense. Thanks for guiding me through it slowly. LOL.
